Outline of Research at the Start

日本をはじめ、世界中の多くの国において自殺は最も深刻な社会問題の一つである。自殺についてのメディア情報をきっかけに自殺の連鎖が起きることは各国で報告されているが、現代日本社会では自殺に関する情報が様々なメディアに溢れている。国際的に推奨されていない内容を含む報道が新聞やテレビで日常的に行われているのはもちろん、若者が触れる機会の多いソーシャルメディア上では悪影響を与える可能性のある内容が頻繁にやり取りされている。本研究は本研究は伝統的なメディア及びソーシャルメディア上における自殺に関する報道・情報の実態をデータを用いて明らかにし、メディア上の情報が人々に与える影響を解明することを目的とする。

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

22年度は主にツイッターの内容分析を行なった。具体的には、ツイッターの一般ユーザーを対象とした大規模なサーベイ調査を実施し、回答者の属性や精神的健康の程度とともにツイッターの公開アカウント名を尋ね、同意が得られたユーザーからツイッター社のAPIを用いて過去及び将来の投稿を収集した。その上で、ツイッター上の発言に基づいて発言者の精神的状態の悪さ(Psychological distress)の程度をLSS（Latent Semantics Scaling）という手法を用いて、数値化を行なった。LSSは分析者が指定した種語を元に、文書の極性値（例：感情のポジティブあるいはネガティブ）を、種語に関連する特定の次元上で計算する手法である。人の手によるコーディングとLSSによる判定はかなりの程度一致することを確認した後に、新型コロナ及び著名人の自殺報道の影響を検証するために、回答者の属性別に精神的状態を2019年から2020年のデータを用いて推定した。その結果、最初の緊急事態宣言より前の2020年2月くらいから人々の精神状態状態が悪くなっていること、中でも経済的弱者、元々精神状態が悪い人に大きな影響があることが明らかになった。2020年には複数の著名人による自殺報道があったが、報道後に特に精神状態の悪化は観察されなかった。結果は海外の学術誌において発表した。それ以外にも、新型コロナの自殺者数の影響を引き続き検討し、国際共同研究として海外の学術誌に発表した。

昨今のソーシャルメディアの重要性に鑑み、今後は既に収集済みの他のソーシャルメディアの分析を引き続き進めていく予定である。
