Outline of Research at the Start

滑らかな超曲面、区分的に滑らかな超曲面、多面体の全てを含む超曲面の新しいクラスを定義し、このクラスに属する超曲面に対して法線、法変分、曲率などの幾何的概念の一般化を定義して、非等方的エネルギー(結晶のエネルギーの数理モデル)の変分問題をモデルとして変分法を構築すると共にエネルギー勾配流方程式を解析する方法を構築する。また、それを離散曲面の幾何学に応用する。さらに、物理学や建築工学の研究者との協働により、物理現象解明やより良い物作りのための具体的な変分問題に対し、本研究で得た理論を応用する。

Outline of Final Research Achievements

We studied piecewise smooth hypersurfaces in the Euclidean and the Minkowski space. We defined curvatures and several other geometric concepts for such hypersurfaces. By applying them, we studied several variational problems of area, volume, and anisotropic energy, and obtained many results on the geometric properties, existence, uniqueness, and stability of solutions. We also proposed some new variational problems for studying physical phenomena and manufacturing and solved them in collaboration with a physicist and architects.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

区分的に滑らかな曲面はいくつかの滑らかな曲面を連続的に繋いだものであり、折り目を持つ曲面や多面体などを含む。このような曲面の「折り目」を数学的に定義し、そこでの曲がり具合を表す量を定式化した。このことにより、数学的には、滑らかな曲面、区分的に滑らかな曲面、多面体を統一的に扱うことが容易になった。また、結晶の形を含む種々の物理現象の解明、採光に優れ材料費が節約可能な建築物の形の設計、組み立てやすい家具や仮設建造物の設計など社会的に有用な課題への応用もある。
