Outline of Research at the Start

星形成の現場である分子雲は、星間ガスの高密度領域であり、原子ガスから分子ガスへの相転移領域で分子雲が誕生すると考えられている。しかしその物理過程は未解明であり、衝撃波による星間ガスの圧縮などの効果が重要であるとの理論的提案がされている。これらを観測的に明らかにするため、分子雲形成が進行中であることが期待される高銀緯雲に対し、広範なCOとCIの複数輝線観測を行い、温度や密度などの物理状態を求め、分子雲形成の初期条件を明らかにすることを目指す。

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

2020年からパンデミックの影響でチリ現地に渡航ができず、望遠鏡の運用が停止していたが、2023年度に作業を再開、3度の渡航で再起動に向けた作業を行なった。まず、望遠鏡とドーム・発電機など基本的なインフラのダメージを確認した。望遠鏡ドームの外壁に、強風で穴が空いていたこと、そこから入り込んだ砂による鏡面の汚れが確認できたが、それ以上に大きな問題はなく、電源を投入し望遠鏡を駆動することができた。ギヤやモータ、発電機用ディーゼルエンジンなどのメンテナンスを行なった。また上記のドーム外壁は修理し、鏡面の汚れも除去した。
また受信機の冷却試験を行い、性能の評価を行った。以前より雑音温度が高いことがわかっていたものと今回の測定で問題が見つかった部分について、冷却アンプと超伝導素子の交換を行い、電波スペクトルを取得することができた。受信機の最適化にはさらに調整が必要ではあるが、科学観測まで実行できる目処が立ち、望遠鏡の再起動に向けて準備を進めた。
前年度から進めていた、新しい望遠鏡制御ソフトウェアの開発については、おおむね開発を終えた。野辺山観測所にある1.85m望遠鏡に搭載し、駆動試験を実施、最終のデバッグ作業を進めている。これにより、望遠鏡の高速スキャンが可能となり、観測効率を飛躍的に向上させることができる。
ASTE望遠鏡を用いた観測では、中性炭素CI 2-1輝線のデータを取得できた。ただし望遠鏡の副鏡にトラブルが発生し、観測は当初予定していた範囲の一部に限られた。また、ALMA望遠鏡によるCorona Australis分子雲の観測では、高密度領域の高空間分解能観測データを解析し、1000 AUスケールの微細なフィラメント構造を多数検出した。また周囲の水素原子ガスの膨張シェル構造との関連を調べ、原子ガスの降着による星団形成を考察、結果をApJ誌に投稿した。

3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.

Reason

これまで、世界的なパンデミックの影響、その後のアタカマサイトでの盗難事件などにより、現在までの進捗には遅れが出ていた。またASTE望遠鏡には、副鏡駆動に断続的に問題が発生して、予定した観測も延期されていた。国立天文台はこの問題の解決に向け対処し、部分的には運用されたが、観測時間は限られていた。また別のプロジェクトのための受信機の搭載などもあり、我々が予定していたヘテロダイン受信機を用いた観測は、十分にはできなかった。
そのため、中性炭素の観測データは当初予定していた範囲をカバーできていないが、すでにオリオン分子雲で得られた複数輝線のデータから、原子ガスの温度と柱密度の分布が示せた。ほぼ同じ場所に存在する原子ガスと分子ガスで、温度が違うことを示しており、異なる相のガスが小さなスケールで混在していることが明らかになった。特に星からのフィードバックと周囲のガスの加熱・冷却機構について、モデルとの比較が重要であることがわかった。紫外線加熱と衝撃波加熱、放射冷却を考慮し、環境の異なる領域、例えば高銀緯分子雲で来年度同様の観測を行うことで、星間ガスの物理状態を決めるメカニズムを調べる予定である。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

2024年度には、望遠鏡制御ソフトウェアのデバッグを完了する。すでに1.85m望遠鏡を使っての試験は進み、問題点の特定はできている。またNANTEN2望遠鏡に固有のデバイスについてもドライバソフトウェアは完成しており、搭載の準備は進んでいる。そこで8月ごろをめどにチリサイトに渡航し、新ソフトウェアシステムの搭載を進める。また新たに見つかった性能の良くない超伝導素子の交換と受信機全体の調整を行い、試験観測を行う。キャリブレーションに必要なデータの取得など、コミッショニングを行ったのち、科学観測を開始し、データを取得する。
観測対象としているペガスス座領域には、すでに先行研究のデータがあるのでそれをガイドマップとし、効率的に観測を実行することで、1月程度でCOデータ取得を完了できる。また同領域に対して、ASTE望遠鏡によるサブミリ波帯CI 1-0, 2-1輝線観測も行い、原子・分子ガスそれぞれの温度・密度を導出、オリオン座領域での結果と比較し、中性炭素から分子ガスへの相転移が起きる物理条件を明らかにするとともに、論文化を進める。
