Outline of Research at the Start

地球近くの宇宙空間では相対論的な速さを持つ粒子が地球磁場に捕捉され、放射線帯を形成している。放射線帯は地磁気擾乱に応じて増加する場合と減少する場合があり、その変動は長年の謎となっている。電磁波動の成長が放射線帯の変動を決定している公算が大きいが、これらの粒子群が惑星間空間からエネルギーを獲得するまでの過程はよく分かっていない。本研究では、最新のシミュレーション、最新の電磁波動成長理論、史上最密の観測データを組み合わせ、惑星間空間から地球本体そして放射線帯に至るエネルギーの流れの全貌と、放射線帯変動に至るまでの諸過程の役割とその寄与分を定量的に明らかにする。

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

サブストームは磁気圏でおこる代表的な突発現象である。サブストームに伴って熱いプラズマは内部磁気圏に注入され、これらのプラズマの温度異方性によって励起されたコーラス波動や電磁イオンサイクロトロン波は粒子との相互作用を通じて粒子の速度分布を大きく変えることが知られている。サブストームが起こると極域電離圏ではジェット電流が流れ、10の11乗ワットものエネルギーが消費される。このとき電離圏では電位分布が変わり、磁気圏のダイナミクスにも影響を与えると考えられる。極域電離圏へのエネルギー輸送の要は低周波の電磁波動であるアルベン波であり、沿磁力線電流を伴っていることが知られている。アルベン波と沿磁力線電流の生成機構は長年の問題で、よく分かっていない。沿磁力線電流を担うアルベン波のパケットを追跡しその発生領域を特定するという前年度に提案した新しい方法を用い、オーロラ・サブストームを駆動する沿磁力線電流は地球近傍の赤道面付近で発生していることを明らかにした。磁気圏近尾部で磁気再結合がおこると地球向きの高速プラズマ流が発生する。高速プラズマ流が地球に近づくと東方向と西方向に分かれ、東西方向のプラズマ流は地球の磁力線を引っ張り、アルベン波を励起していた。我々はこの領域を「地球近傍沿磁力線電流ダイナモ」と名付けた。前年度の研究で、領域１型沿磁力線電流は「低緯度磁気圏境界（フランク）沿磁力線電流ダイナモ」領域で生成していることを明らかにした。後者はサブストームの成長相を、前者はサブストームの拡大相と関係していると考えられる。大規模な沿磁力線電流は大規模な磁気圏プラズマの運動を付随していることから、内部磁気圏に輸送されるプラズマの運動を沿磁力線電流ダイナモの言葉で統一的に説明できる可能性がある。

Reason

サブストーム時に発生する沿磁力線電流とアルベン波の発生領域とメカニズムを特定することができた。従来、電流Jと電場Eの内積が負となる領域で沿磁力線電流（アルベン波）が発生すると考えられていたが、必ずしもそうであるとは限らず、磁力線の張力とプラズマ速度の内積を考慮すると合理的に説明できることが分かった。サブストーム時における内部磁気圏粒子環境変動の理解に繋がる重要な成果である。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

太陽風から電離圏に至るエネルギー輸送・変換過程について惑星間空間磁場の向きに対する依存性を調べ、対流電場との関係、とくにサブストーム時における内部磁気圏に輸送される熱い電子やイオンとの関係、内部磁気圏に至るエネルギーの流れ、内部磁気圏におけるコーラス波動および電磁イオンサイクロトロン波の励起に至るエネルギ－の流れの明らかにする。
