本研究は、人口減少社会での集約型都市構造化に向けて様々な都市政策が打たれる中、都市の持続的な発展のためには、観光はどのような役割が果たせるのかに関して有用な知見を得るために、都市計画・政策と観光政策の関連、および都市変容と観光振興の相互作用について実証的に分析することを試みている。
具体的には、いくつかの都市を選定し、人口構造、産業構造といった都市的側面と、観光入込客数、集客施設の立地といった観光的側面の両者から都市の発展過程を捉え両者の関係性を分析している。それにより観光振興を考慮した都市の持続的な発展を表現する概念モデルを提示することを最終目的としている。

2022年度は、我が国の地方都市における都市政策及び観光政策の連携に関する現地調査と資料収集及び分析が主題である。
そこでまず今年度は、国内で都市政策と観光政策が連携していると推測される都市（松山市・高松市、那覇市・沖縄市、姫路市）を対象とした。また、広域的集客力を持つ観光資源のない都市（和歌山市、福井市、いわき市）も対象とした。
対象都市の発展過程を概観し、都市政策及び観光政策の連携を分析考察するために、都市の空間的、景観的状況を把握するための現地調査と過去の観光振興の概況などがわかる資料収集を図書館などで行った。
さらに、研究分担者と観光振興を考慮した都市の持続的発展を表現する概念モデルを構築するためのブレインストーミングを行なった。

今後は、地方都市だ現地調査と資料収集を続けるとともに、研究分担者とブレインストーミングを重ね、観光振興を考慮した都市の持続的発展を表現する概念モデルの構築を可能にしていきたい。合わせて、最終年の海外都市との比較による検証までの研究計画を詳細に詰めたい。
