| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
The boundary between the Palearctic and Oriental biogeographic regions is located in the Tokara Strait and is known as the Watershed Line. As is the case for freshwater organisms and many terrestrial organisms, the biogeographic boundary for marine organisms has been considered to be the Watershed Line. However, this study revealed that the boundary for marine fishes is actually located in the Osumi Islands between Yaku-shima Island and "Iwo-jima, Take-shima, and Tanega-shima islands." This new distributional boundary is defined as the Osumi Line and validated.
