万延元（1860）年に遣米使節団が米国政府にもたらした贈答品（スミソニアン機構・博物館サポートセンター国立自然史博物館人類学部門所蔵）および、文久元年（1862）における遣欧使節の派遣に際して幕府から修好通商条約の締結国であるイギリス、フランス、オランダ、プロシア、ロシア、ポルトガルの6カ国へ向けて贈られた贈答品を中心に、その他徳川幕府から欧米諸国に対して贈られた美術品など幕末期の外交に関わる美術品を研究対象とし、実物資料の調査と文献資料の精査により、「もの」が外交に果たした役割を考察する。

| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
Focusing on items related to the 1860 Japanese Mission to the United States and the 1862 Mission to Europe, the project (1) confirmed the location of the gifts, (2) conducted expert research on existing actual materials, (3) examined Japanese and European documents and discussed them in relation to existing materials, and (4) collected and discussed information on the reception of the gifts, etc.
As more diplomatic gifts in the collections of the Smithsonian Institution and the White House (above-mentioned in the USA) and more items than expected in Europe were located, we conducted a focused survey of materials from France, Portugal and the UK. Comparisons and examinations were made from the perspectives of art history and diplomatic history, and the role played by objects in diplomacy was discussed.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
日本が欧米諸国との外交を樹立する幕末期、各国との間に交わされた贈答品に関しては、従来の美術史、日本史研究においては見過ごされがちであった。本研究は、使節団贈答品の所在確認と現存資料の調査に加えて、関係する外交史料の研究を行うことにより、その外交史・文化史的意義を探り、双方の学問領域に新たな成果をもたらした。主対象とした万延遣米使節および文久遣欧使節関係品の所在確認や文献解析を行う過程で、前後の別の機会における外交美術品や使節団経由地宛贈答品の存在や内容も明らかとなり、当初の想定を超える成果と研究視点の広がりがあった。また、関連学会や展示等の開催により、社会的な関心を高めることができた。
