| Outline of Research at the Start |
本研究は、30年後の日本を日本人と外国人が共同で支えることを理想の多文化共生社会と見なし、「やさしい日本語」を鍵概念に、その実現のために必要な言語的課題の解決を、言語教育、言語研究、言語政策の観点から考究する。
言語教育的観点からは、日本手話引き日本語基本語辞典やJSL生徒向け日本語教科書の開発や新たな漢字シラバスの開発などを目指す。
言語研究的観点からは、専門家から非専門家への説明における言語表現やマスコミの言語表現の分析を行い、その改善などを提言する。
言語政策的観点からは、日本語学校を初めとする外国人受け入れ政策の総合的研究とそれにもとづくあり得べき言語政策の提言などを行う。

| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
The outcomes of this research are as follows: 1) Publication of a comprehensive textbook for JSL (Japanese as a Second Language) students (final volume of a three-volume series), 2) Publication of a collection of papers comprehensively examining Plain Japanese, 3) Holding of a public symposium addressing various issues related to Japanese Sign Language, including the creation of a basic Japanese dictionary for deaf children, 4) Promotion of research on information dissemination in Plain Japanese in collaboration with a local government and evaluation by citizens, and the holding of two public symposiums on the collaborative study, 5) the holding of a public symposium on the comparison of immigration policies in Japan and abroad and the relationships among stakeholders in Japan. Additionally, efforts were made to promote the concept of “Yasashii-Nihongo(Easy/Plain Japanese)” through the writing of papers and giving lectures.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
本研究の学術的意義は、第一に、JSL生徒を対象とする総合教科書の体系的作成により、同生徒の日本語能力の確実な向上を可能にしたことである。第二は、「日本語母語話者にとっての「やさしい日本語」」であるPlain Japaneseの多角的検討を通して、「やさしい日本語」の理念をマジョリティである日本語母語話者に浸透させるための理論的根拠が得られたことである。
本研究の社会的意義は、日本の言語政策を海外の移民受け入れ政策との比較を通して検討することでその課題を明らかにし、日本国内の重要なステークホルダーである日本語学校と関連づけて実証的に考察することで、より有効な言語政策の提案を可能にしたことにある。
