Outline of Research at the Start

We are collecting a retrospective sample of Japanese university graduates who both studied abroad and did not study abroad. This sample will help us determine if short term study abroad had a lasting impact on students after they leave university. This is a primary research question for this grant.

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

This year our team made four significant advances.
First, we collected significant data using our adapted LENS instrument, and it now exists in English, Japanese, and Korean. We are working with the original creator of LENS, Dr. Tracy Rundstrom at Texas Christian University. Three publications are underway. The first is an update of the LENS model called LENS3. This is a theory-driven article. The second is analyses of LENS3 pilots completed by students who went abroad. The third explores the ongoing development of bespoke LENS3 narrative frames for specific study tour programs.
Second, our 2021 dataset has been fully cleaned and preliminary analyses are complete.
Third, one of our Co-Investigators completed the Cultural Intelligence (CQ) certification process. All necessary investigators are now CQ certified. This completes our shift away from the Intercultural Effectiveness Scale (IES).
Fourth, we have begun to use Aresi, et al's (2016) dataset to complete secondary analyses related to study abroad motivation. This will directly inform our forthcoming and final round of data collection. We have also added three new demographic datapoints to this dataset. First, a marker for student major as profession-specified or non-specified. Second, a marker indicating whether the student was linguistically connected to the English language either via their country/language of origin or destination. Third, a marker indicating linguistic distance between their first language and the primary language used in their host country.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.

Reason

We are slightly delayed.
Three primary reasons for the delay.
First, the analysis of the preliminary dataset, as well as our interest in ensuring we incorporate our (forthcoming) findings from a secondary analysis of Aresi et al's (2016) dataset into our next (& final) round of data collection. This takes time.
Second, we had planned to begin working on incorporating several of the simulation activities into study abroad preparation courses and other courses at our respective universities. Unfortunately, our teaching schedules are not always up to us and, therefore, teaching plans that incorporated piloting of these simulations is no longer possible.
Third, we decided to delay manuscript prep for LENS3 publication until after we could gather more data using multilingual versions of LENS3.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

In 2024-25, we intend to:
1. PILOT - We intend to pilot our simulation activities across at least three institutions. At least one researcher will need to do this outside of the classroom.
2. SURVEY - We intend to collect at least one large dataset using Qualtrics to gather the sample. The sample will be retrospective and limited to Japanese individuals aged 20-30. This will be a large survey comprising the heart of all future research output on this grant.
3. PRESENT - We have already confirmed three presentations this year. We expect to hit 10 presentations across Japan. We are considering hosting a small conference aimed at our research questions.
4. PUBLISH - We are beginning manuscript prep related to a. secondary analysis of Aresi, et al (2016); b. LENS3; c. our in-house data
