Outline of Research at the Start

過去数千年間における北海道沿岸の海洋生産性の変化を復元することを目的として,考古学的な遺跡から出土したキタオットセイおよびマダラの骨のDNA分析,炭素・窒素・酸素同位体分析を行う。これにより,海洋生態系の長期的な変遷を明らかにするだけでなく,海産物に非常に高く依存した食生活を一貫しておくってきた北海道の人々が,海洋環境の変化からどのような影響を受けていたのかを推定するための手がかりを得る。

Outline of Final Research Achievements

This study aims to investigate the long-term changes in marine productivity along the coast of Hokkaido over the past 6,000 years and their impact on human populations. To achieve this goal, ancient DNA analysis and carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen stable isotope analysis were conducted on the bones of northern fur seals (Callorhinus ursinus) and Pacific cod (Gadus macrocephalus) excavated from archaeological sites in Hokkaido. The results did not indicate any evident changes in the population structure of northern fur seals or Pacific cod, nor did the isotope analysis reveal significant fluctuations in marine productivity. However, compared with population changes estimated from calibrated radiocarbon dates, the study primarily focused on periods of high population density. Therefore, to better assess potential variations in marine productivity, future research should incorporate materials from periods of lower population density.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

本研究の学術的意義は,これまで人類史の復元にしか利用されていなかった遺跡出土動植物遺体を,動植物や生態系の歴史復元にも利用する歴史生態学的な視点を考古学に導入する契機となる点にある。これにより多額の社会的投資に支えられている埋蔵文化財・考古資料の価値を上げることにもつながる。現時点での研究成果は,北海道の住民が海に高く依存しつつも,長期にわたって安定的かつ持続的にその資源を利用し,絶滅に追い込むようなこともなかったことを示している点で,先住民であるアイヌ民族の歴史と文化の特徴を理解するための重要な科学的根拠となる。ただし,海洋生産性の変動の有無については,今後,さらにデータの追加が必要である。
