| Outline of Research at the Start |
本研究は、日米の若年世代を対象として統計的社会調査を実施し、データを計量社会学的に分析することで、日米の若年世代の価値意識・社会意識の分布状況、価値の変容について明らかにする。日米の若年世代の価値意識と社会意識の様態と変容、そして日米の差異を生じさせる要因を捉えるため、社会意識の計量的研究のこれまでの成果および青年期心理学の知見を用い、新たに開発する質問項目によって、インターネット調査を行う。

| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
We conducted a statistical social survey of young people in Japan and the U.S. to clarify the distribution of value and social opinion. Using the results of previous quantitative research on sociological social psychology, we conducted an Internet survey using newly developed questions and analyzed the data. The distribution of responses and the relationship between variables were compared between Japan and the U.S. The results showed that (1) life satisfaction was the item that showed the largest difference between Japan and the U.S., as has been confirmed so far, and (2) items that exceeded its difference, such as life 10 years from now, enjoying life now rather than in the future, and xenophobia attitudes, (3) differences in political awareness, gender awareness, and environmental awareness are not as large as those in the positive sentiment items.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
日本の若者世代の全体を理解するために，サーベイ調査は有用性の高い手法だと考えられるが，全国住民の無作為抽出標本に訪問面接法や郵送法で調査実施することはコストが大きく，少子化と回収率の低下で特に若者への調査は困難である。この限界に対して一定の有効性をもつ調査を，方法的検討を加えて実施したことは研究方法上の意義がある。この方法によって国際比較調査研究の実施可能性を高めたと考える。また，新しい若者世代の価値意識の特徴と変化を，国際比較調査データによって把握することで，現代の若者世代がおかれている困難や，ものごとに関する考え方の傾向をよりよく理解するという社会的意義がある。
