Outline of Research at the Start
This research plans to conduct qualitative interviews with international students and other stakeholders involved in international education in Germany and Japan to understand how students make decisions about their study abroad choices. We supplement the qualitative interviews with quantitative survey data obtained from JASSO in Japan and DAAD in Germany.

Outline of Annual Research Achievements
In 2024, the main effort of this project was in analyzing data and producing research outcomes. The project has yield a large number of interviews and we transcribes, translated, and organized them into usable and sharable data set. We also started to use the data to produce research outputs. During 2024, not only did faculty members of this project actively participated in international conferences and produce journal articles and book chapters, the graduate student research assistants involved in this project were also encouraged to use the data collected to author or co-author conference papers and journal publications. (Please refer to the list of publications and international conferences.) Currently, a special issue on international student mobility is under review at Journal of Immigration and Refugee Studies. Two research assistants have submitted papers respectively on Vietnamese students in Japan (single authored) and international students in Germany (co-authored with PI). In addition, the PI submitted papers based on this data set in the academic year of 2024 and has been invited to present at two international conferences in 2025, including 2025 Annual Conference of the Australian Studies Association of Japan (Tokyo) in June, and American Sociological Association Annual Conference (Chicago) in August.

Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
We originally planned to wrap up the project in 2024. However, due to several reasons, the completion of the project delayed and we decided to extent for another year. 1) The principle investigator was invited to participate in two additional projects funded by European Research Council and JICA respectively. Because of the demand of effort from the other projects, the time spent on this project was reduced. 2)We originally planned to finalize our project with a symposium. However, there were important career mobilities among the project members, including one taking up university leadership position and another moving from one university to another. Such career mobilities consumed time and energy, and made it difficult to coordinate time to the symposium. 3) Because of the amount of interview data, we felt that we needed more time to analyze and utilize it. It is better to delay a year and produce more research outputs.

Strategy for Future Research Activity
The project will wrap up in 2025. The main effort during this year will be utilizing the data for publications. We have been coordinating among members to decide who will focus on what segments of the data for journal articles. The principle investigator is also considering the possibility of a book based on this project.
