Outline of Research at the Start

本研究は、次世代(Society 5.0やPost & With-Covid-19)に活躍する児童・生徒の日本型のSTEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics)リテラシーを育成するための初等・中等教育を一貫する学習プログラムに関する理論的・実証的研究を行う。諸外国のSTEM教育に関する研究成果を分析するだけではなく、日本の教育的文脈や学校文化なども考慮して、日本型のSTEM教育について、理論的、実践的(試行)研究を行う。

Outline of Final Research Achievements

In this study, we conducted theoretical research and empirical/practical research on Japanese-style STEM education. As a theoretical study, we provisionally defined the meaning of the‘Japanese style’and the‘STEM literacy’to be developed. We also analyzed the trends in STEM education in Europe and the United States, the history of each subject related to STEM in Japan, and clarified social trends related to the development of STEM human resources. In addition, we analyzed the current state of STEM education from the perspective of the continuity of learning in each subject related to STEM education, and from the perspective of cognitive and learning science theory. Furthermore, material research was conducted to develop STEM teaching materials, and teaching materials were tested to verify their effectiveness and clarify tentative issues. As a practical/empirical study, we designed and implemented STEM lessons focused on science from elementary to high schools.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

本研究の学術的意義は、教科教育研究者や教育学、認知科学研究者により、世界的動向の分析およびSTEM教育を構成する各教科の歴史的な本質を分析して、日本の教育的文脈に沿った日本型のSTEM教育について理論的に研究を行った点である。そして、その知見などを取り入れSTEM教育に関わる授業をデザインし、実践をしたことである。また、本研究の社会的意義は、国内外における学会での成果発表だけではなく、日本語と英語の書籍出版を通して、これからSTEM教育を学校で実践するための理論的知見と実践の在り方と方法を示した点である。
