Outline of Research at the Start

相関電子系では、誘電性・磁性・弾性などの諸性質を複数含むような物性現象が現れる。それらの発現に本質的なミクロな電子自由度の役割を理解することは、今後の高機能・高効率な物質設計へとつなげていくためにも重要である。本研究では、結晶中における電子自由度を統一的に表現できる拡張多極子を用いることで、従来の群論による「マクロな対称性と物性現象」の枠組みを超えて「ミクロな電子自由度と物性現象」という電子自由度に立脚した理論形式を構築し、さらなる機能物性探索へと展開するための理論的基盤の確立を目指す。

Outline of Final Research Achievements

By advancing the multipole representation theory that enables a unified description of multiple electronic degrees of freedom in solids, we have constructed a framework for comprehensively understanding a wide variety of cross-correlated responses and quantum transport phenomena from a microscopic perspective. As major achievements, we classified the active multipoles for all 122 magnetic point groups characterizing magnetic materials, and clarified how their ferroic multipole ordered states correspond to various physical phenomena. Furthermore, through theoretical analyses based on the multipole representation, we uncovered mechanisms for novel physical phenomena such as the anomalous Hall effect induced by anisotropic magnetic dipoles, nonreciprocal transport arising from noncoplanar magnetic structures, and spin current generation driven by electric toroidal dipoles, leading to a broad range of discoveries that exceeded initial expectations.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

近年、電気磁気効果や異常ホール効果といった物性現象に対して、従来とは異なる新機構を探る試みが、実験・理論の両面から精力的に進められている。本研究の主な成果は、これまで個々の具体的な系に対して個別に行われてきた理論解析を、より俯瞰的な立場から統一的に理解するために、多極子の概念を拡張し、原子・分子・結晶といったあらゆる系に適用可能な理論枠組みを構築したことである。さらに、各種多極子と物性現象との関係性を明らかにすることで、新たな交差相関応答や量子伝導現象の開拓にも成功した。これにより、ミクロな電子自由度の観点から物性現象の制御可能性が高まり、今後の機能性物質探索に向けた基盤を築くことができた。
