Outline of Research at the Start

本研究では我々の宇宙における暗黒物質の有力候補であるアクシオンに焦点を当て、近傍宇宙に点在する強磁場高密度天体の電磁波観測によってアクシオン暗黒物質の間接検出が可能かどうかを理論的に検証する。特に、中性子星磁気圏における磁場構造およびプラズマのダイナミクスに関する最先端の知見を取り入れ、そこでアクシオン暗黒物質が引き起こす特異な電磁気現象を、数値シミュレーションにより詳細に解析する。これにより、期待されるアクシオン由来の電磁波信号を定量的に評価し、観測可能性を明らかにする。

Outline of Final Research Achievements

In this project, we focused on the axion, which is one of the most promising candidates for dark matter, and studied whether the axion dark matter can be indirectly probed by the radio observation of strongly magnetized compact objects in our nearby universe. In particular, by taking into account realistic plasma distributions and propagation processes of electromagnetic waves in magnetosphere, we analyzed the characteristic electromagnetic phenomena induced by the axion. Then, we quantitatively calculated radio signals from the axion and clarified the observational possibility by future radio telescopes. In addition, we also studied the evolution of the axion in the early universe and found that gravitational waves can be emitted in some situation. Thus, we have pointed out that gravitational wave observation can be a useful axion probe complementary to the radio search of strongly magnetized compact objects.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

宇宙に存在する暗黒物質の正体を解明することは自然科学における最重要課題の一つに挙げられる。本研究により、「アクシオン」という素粒子理論から予言される暗黒物質の候補を探る方法が開拓された。これは、暗黒物質の正体解明に一歩近づいたことを意味する。暗黒物質の正体解明は素粒子の究極理論を完成させるために必要不可欠であるため、本研究成果は、宇宙創成・物質の起源の謎を解き明かすことに貢献している。また、本研究成果は電波望遠鏡による宇宙観測と密接に結びついているおり、中性子星の新たな観測的側面を提案するものである。これにより、宇宙観測分野のさらなる活性化も期待でき、新技術の発展に寄与できると考えている。
