Outline of Research at the Start

低周波電波望遠鏡ASKAP・MWAなどの大規模偏波サーベイで観測された銀河の偏波スペクトルに対してファラデートモグラフィを適用し、各天体 の偏波強度の視線方向分布の情報を集めたファラデートモグラフィカタログを作製する。このカタログデータと2次元イメージを組み合わせる ことで、銀河の磁場・宇宙線電子密度・熱的電子密度・乱流スペクトルなどの物理量の3次元分布を再構成する。また、銀河と銀河外の磁場を 分離して測定することを試み、銀河間空間特にボイド領域の磁場を初めて検出する、もしくはこれまでより強い制限を加えることを目指す。

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

インドの電波干渉計uGMRT (upgraded Giant Metrewave Radio Telescopoe)によって太陽系外惑星beta Pictoris bの観測を複数回行い、100MHz帯の低周波電波放射に対する上限値を得た。これにより、この惑星が持つ磁場や大気、回転などに関する情報が得られた。これらは惑星の内部構造の物理状態を反映しており、有益な示唆が得られた。
またインドのグループとの共同研究により、電波干渉計uGMRTを用いてミリ秒パルサーの長期にわたる精密な観測を行った。ヨーロッパのグループのデータと組み合わせてパルサータイミングアレイのデータ解析を行うことで、ナノヘルツの周波数を持つ重力波が宇宙のあらゆる方向から地球に届いていることを示す強力な証拠(3シグマ程度)を得た。この背景重力波は、遠方の銀河にある複数の超巨大ブラックホール連星から発生していると考えられる。さらに、単一の重力波天体の天球面上での位置を精密に決定する上で、パルサーの距離を正確に測定することが非常に有用である可能性を研究した。例えば10ナノ秒のホワイトノイズが存在する場合,1パーセクの距離精度を持つ数個のパルサーだけで,天体の位置の精度が1桁以上向上することを示した。

Reason

当初用いる予定であった電波望遠鏡MWAは事情により観測時間が確保できていないが、その代わりに電波干渉計uGMRTの観測時間が得られ、太陽系外惑星やパルサーの観測で大きな成果を得た。特に国際共同研究によりパルサーの観測から背景重力波の有力な証拠が得られたことは大きい。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

引き続き、様々な電波望遠鏡の観測時間をできるだけ確保して偏波観測を行い、銀河磁場の研究やデータ解析のソフトウェアの開発をおこなっていく。
