Outline of Research at the Start

スカンジナビア半島北部において、2023年冬季に観測を開始予定の世界最大・最高性能の電離圏レーダー「EISCAT_3D」と、多点カメラネットワークによるオーロラ同時観測を実施する。取得した電波・光学観測データに最先端の「一般化オーロラトモグラフィ逆問題解析手法」を応用して電離圏の電気伝導度、電場の3次元構造を復元し、最終的に3次元電流回路の導出を目指す。この新しい3D観測・解析により、オーロラ電子降り込みがもたらす電離圏の電気伝導度、電場、電流の3次元構造の変動がどのように磁気圏にフィードバックし、磁気圏プラズマ対流、延いては、オーロラ自身の時空間発展を引き起こすのかを初めて観測的に示せる可能性がある。

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

これまでに開発・改良してきた一般化オーロラトモグラフィ解析ツールを、2018年2月18日に北欧の3観測点の単色光全天イメージャ(波長427.8nm)で撮影されたパッチ状脈動オーロラに適用し、オーロラ発光強度の3次元分布、並びに、降下電子フラックスのエネルギー分布の時空間変動を復元した。得られた解析結果をノルウェー・トロムソのEISCATレーダーで同時観測された電離圏電子密度の高度プロファイルと比較し、本手法がオーロラ3次元分布を推定するのに有効であることを明らかにした。
上記パッチ状脈動オーロラに対して、さらに波長557.7nmの画像データを加えて解析を行い、電離圏電気伝導度の3次元分布を推定した。同様の手法を用いることにより、今後EISCAT_3Dレーダーによって電離圏の電場分布が得られれば、3次元電流系を推定することが可能となった。
冬季にノルウェー・シーボトンの多波長全天イメージャによるオーロラの連続観測を実施した。ノルウェー・トロムソ、スウェーデン・アビスコ、フィンランド・キルピスヤルビ等に設置されているWatecイメージャやEMCCDイメージャと合わせて、オーロラトモグラフィ解析に利用可能なデータを取得した。取得したデータを分野標準フォーマットであるCommon Data Format(CDF)に変換し、ウェブサイトで公開した。
シミュレーションにより、EISCAT_3Dレーダー・多点イメージャネットワーク観測による多層アークのモデルデータを作成し、一般化オーロラトモグラフィ解析の模擬実験を行った。これにより、本手法が多層アークの復元にも有効であることが示され、2023年冬季以降のEISCAT_3Dレーダー観測開始に合わせた共同研究の準備が整った。

Reason

ノルウェー・シーボトンをはじめとする北欧のイメージャ観測点での多点オーロラ光学観測を実行して、オーロラトモグラフィ解析に利用可能な光学データを取得することができた。また、得られたデータを分野標準フォーマットであるCommon Data Format(CDF)に変換して公開し、容易にデータ解析できる環境を整備した。
他方で、コロナ禍の影響等によってEISCAT_3Dレーダーの建設が遅れており、未だ観測開始に至っていない。EISCAT_3Dレーダー・光学ネットワーク観測を模擬したシミュレーション研究を行う等、一般化オーロラトモグラフィ観測・解析の準備は整いつつあり、EISCAT_3Dレーダーの完成、観測開始が待たれる。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

これまでに取得したディスクリートオーロラの多点オーロラ画像データ、EISCAT UHFレーダーデータに一般化オーロラトモグラフィ解析ツールを適用し、オーロラ発光強度の3次元分布、降下電子フラックスのエネルギー分布の復元例を増やし、オーロラ3次元分布の時空間変動に関する新たな知見を得る。
得られたオーロラの3次元分布から電離圏電気伝導度の3次元分布を導出する。地磁気ネットワーク観測から電離圏等価電流系を導出し、電離圏電気伝導度と組み合わせて3次元電流系を推定する。推定した3次元電流系を磁気圏電離圏結合過程の観点から解釈し、新たな知見を得る。
北欧での多点オーロラ光学観測を継続し、EISCATレーダーとのオーロラ同時観測イベントを数多く取得する。得られたデータは、引き続きCommon Data Format(CDF)に変換して公開する。
