Outline of Research at the Start

スカンジナビア半島北部において、2023年冬季に観測を開始予定の世界最大・最高性能の電離圏レーダー「EISCAT_3D」と、多点カメラネットワークによるオーロラ同時観測を実施する。取得した電波・光学観測データに最先端の「一般化オーロラトモグラフィ逆問題解析手法」を応用して電離圏の電気伝導度、電場の3次元構造を復元し、最終的に3次元電流回路の導出を目指す。この新しい3D観測・解析により、オーロラ電子降り込みがもたらす電離圏の電気伝導度、電場、電流の3次元構造の変動がどのように磁気圏にフィードバックし、磁気圏プラズマ対流、延いては、オーロラ自身の時空間発展を引き起こすのかを初めて観測的に示せる可能性がある。

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

EISCAT_3Dレーダーの完成が予定よりも遅れているため、EISCAT_3Dレーダー運用開始後に速やかに解析が可能となるように準備を進めた。これまでのシミュレーション研究を発展させ、多層アークのモデルオーロラを作り、EISCAT_3Dレーダーと多点イメージャによる模擬観測データを作成した。このデータに一般化オーロラトモグラフィ法を応用し、多層アークの3次元分布及び降下電子エネルギーフラックスの水平分布の復元をテストした。その結果、EISCAT_3Dの電子密度データを組み合わせることで、画像データだけを用いる場合よりも正確な復元が可能であること、例えイメージャの数・配置が不十分・不適切な場合でも比較的高精度な復元が可能であることを明らかにした。この研究成果を国際誌に投稿し、出版された。
さらに、EISCAT_3Dレーダーで1局、複数ビーム観測された電離圏イオン速度の視線方向ベクトルから3次元分布を再構成する手法の開発を進め、シミュレーションにより実現可能性、誤差の調査を行った。この手法は、EISCAT_3Dレーダーの観測が開始された後に電場の空間分布を推定し、3次元電流系を導出する際に用いられる。
冬季に、ノルウェー・シーボトン及びその他北欧に設置されている5か所の簡易型多波長全天イメージャのオーロラの連続観測を継続した。2025年2月に、これら多点イメージャ群に加えて3か所のEMCCD全天イメージャ、6か所のEMCCD広視野イメージャ、及びEISCAT UHFレーダーを組み合わせたオーロラ同時観測を実施し、一般化オーロラトモグラフィ解析に利用可能なディスクリートオーロラ、脈動オーロラの観測データを取得した。取得した画像データは分野標準フォーマットであるCommon Data Format(CDF)に変換してウェブサイトで公開すると共に、データ解析を進めている。

Reason

オーロラ3次元分布復元に関する解析手法・ツールはほぼ完成し、モデル・シミュレーションによるフィージビリティスタディ、及び、従来のEISCATレーダーと多点イメージャの同時観測によるオーロラ3次元分布復元の事例研究は計画通り進んでいる。しかし、EISCAT_3Dレーダーの完成が遅れているため、電離圏3次元観測が為されておらず、最終目標のEISCAT_3Dレーダーと多点イメージャの同時観測データを用いたオーロラ3次元復元が実現できていない。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

2025年冬季にEISCAT_3Dレーダーの観測開始が計画されているため、研究期間を1年間延長した。北欧でのオーロラ多点光学観測を継続し、EISCAT_3Dレーダーとの同時観測を目指す。これと並行して、2025年2月に取得したディスクリートオーロラ、脈動オーロラの多点画像データ、EISCAT UHFレーダーデータをトモグラフィ解析し、オーロラ発光強度、電離圏電気伝導度の3次元分布を復元する。さらに、地磁気ネットワーク観測から電離圏等価電流系を導出し、電離圏電気伝導度と組み合わせて3次元電流系を推定する。
