Outline of Research at the Start

南極氷床融解による海面上昇は人口が集中する低地帯に影響を及ぼすため、社会的に解決すべき喫緊の課題である。南極氷床融解の予測に用いる気候モデルシミュレーションでは、地質学的データから復元される過去の南極氷床変動の記録は制約条件として用いられる。本研究は野外調査の実施および陸上堆積物試料分析から最終間氷期と完新世の海水準記録を復元する。そしてGlacial Isostatic Adjustmentモデルによる詳細な解析により、温暖期における南極氷床の融解のタイミングとその規模について定量的な復元に挑む。

Outline of Final Research Achievements

This study aims to reconstruct Antarctic Ice Sheet changes during the Last Interglacial and Holocene by using terrestrial and lake sediments collected in Lutzow-Holm Bay, East Antarctica, along with glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA) model. We found that luminescence dating can be successfully applied to terrestrial sediments in Antarctica to determine ages around the Last Interglacial period. Also, we observed that the structure of lake water masses changed due to ice sheet and sea-level changes, which helps improve the accuracy of sea-level reconstructions using lake sediments. Our review of over 300 sea-level records across Antarctica showed that there is still a lack of data for the Last Interglacial, and emphasized the need for new sampling and better dating techniques.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

温暖化による海面上昇が危惧されており、2100年までの上昇幅のうち南極氷床の融解が約40%を占めると考えられている。約11700年前から現在の完新世と約12万年前の最終間氷期の南極氷床変動履歴の復元は現在の質量収支の評価や将来予測の精度向上に貢献できる。本研究では、これまで南極で報告されていない最終間氷期の海水準・氷床変動データ取得に向けた年代決定法を評価し、過去の海水準・氷床変動データ取得の高精度化につながる研究成果を得ることができた。これらの成果とGIAモデルによる過去の南極氷床変動史の高精度復元は将来の南極氷床変動予測の高精度化に貢献できると考えられる。
