Outline of Research at the Start

マントル遷移層(深さ410-660kmに対応する)の構造解明は、地球内部の活動を理解するために重要である。本研究は深海底において長期観測を実施してマントル遷移層を探査するための新しい装置と、観測データの解析手法の開発を目的として実施する。従来の観測装置では設置/回収のために補助装置(深海無人探査機など)が必要であることなどの制約により、観測実施の機会が極めて限られるのが難点であった。本研究で開発する観測装置は補助装置の制約を大幅に軽減するもので、マントル遷移層探査の実施機会が大幅に増大することが期待される。また新たな解析手法の開発によって、マントル遷移層に関するより正確な情報抽出が可能となる。

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

本研究は、マントル遷移層研究のグローバル展開に貢献することを目的として、観測技術開発(海底電磁気探査技術の飛躍的な高度化を遂げること)が本研究の柱となるが、同時に観測で得られる長期地震電磁気データの解析によるマントル遷移層の構造解明についても有効な手法の開発を進めることが必要である。本年度は以下の研究を進めた。
・観測技術開発
従来の方法では、マントル遷移層の電気伝導度構造解明のために必須の観測装置EFOS(地球電場観測装置)の設置と回収を無人探査機(ROV)を用いて行なってきた。この方式では、観測を実施する機会が極めて限られてしまう。これを解決するために、設置及び回収方法を多様化する必要がある。本研究ではEFOSの回収を、自己浮上方式でできるようにすることを目標としているが、そのためには、本体耐圧容器と電場測定用のケーブルを自動的に切り離す必要がある。前年度に行った試作した方式のテスト結果によれば、確実に本体耐圧球とケーブルを切り離すことができないことが判明した。そこで本年度は根本的に改め、新たな方式での切り離しメカニズムを設計した。
・データ解析
周期3時間から1日の間の帯域の電磁場変動は,上部マントル深部から遷移層上部に感度が高い一方,空間形状が複雑なため有効な解析手段が未整備で,この帯域が情報のギャップになっている.本研究グループでは,この帯域の解析手法の開発に以前より取り組んできた(例えばShimizu et al., 2009)が,なお多くの課題が残されている.そこで、過去の研究計画等で取得したデータを用いながら解析手法の開発を進めた。特に、球座標系でもモデル計算手法を改良し、正しいMT応答関数が求められるようにした。結果を論文にまとめて国際誌に投稿した。

Reason

当初計画では開発した機器のテスト観測を実施する予定であったが、研究航海を獲得できなかった。次年度に再度申請をし直す予定である。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

装置のテスト観測の目処が立っていないことを除くと、本研究計画は全体として順調に進んでいる。一方で学術研究船の共同利用による航海の獲得は年々厳しくなってきており、最近の採択状況を見ると本研究の目的に適うテスト(陸から離れた深海底において行うことが望ましい)を実施する提案が採択される可能性は低い。今後も航海の獲得を目指して全力を尽くすが、場合によっては大型水槽等を利用したテストで代用することも考慮する。
