Outline of Research at the Start

水の循環は、地球の進化過程を理解する上で重要な概念の一つである。海洋プレートの沈み込みはその循環の一部を担っているが、地球内部に取り込まれた水の挙動は必ずしも明らかになっていない。本研究では、脱水反応によりマントルへ供給された水の行方に注目する。近年、スロー地震と呼ばれる地震現象の発生する領域に、水が大量に含まれていることが分かってきた。研究代表者らは、20年にわたる高精度重力観測の結果から、スロー地震の発生時に水がプレート境界に沿って浅い方へ移動している可能性を指摘した。本研究では、より多くのスロー地震に対して重力シグナルを捉えることで、水の移動様式を定量的に明らかにすることを目的とする。

Outline of Final Research Achievements

The water cycle is one of the key concepts for understanding Earth's evolutionary processes. While the subduction of oceanic plates constitutes a part of this cycle, the behavior of water once it is transported into the Earth's interior remains incompletely understood. In this study, we quantitatively demonstrate, based on precise gravity measurements, that water supplied to the mantle through dehydration reactions of subducting plates can migrate to shallow portions of the plate boundary in association with phenomena such as slow slip events along the Nankai Trough and the large earthquakes in the Noto Peninsula.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

地震発生域における水の様態は、地震学・地質学において、もっとも注目されているテーマの1つである。本研究は、水の移動という既存の研究手法で得ることが困難な情報を、重力の時間変化の観測に基づいて得ることを可能にしたものである。一般に、水が蓄積されるほど地震は起きやすくなる。将来的には、重力観測によって水の蓄積、解放過程を明らかにすることで地震発生が差し迫っているリスクを評価することが可能になる。
