Outline of Research at the Start

沈み込み帯における地震の空間分布が非常に多様であることは、観測の進展に伴って近年理解が進んできたが、その原因は未だ解明されていない。そこで本研究は、沈み込む物質の摩擦特性と続成作用が地震の空間分布に果たす役割を明らかにすることを目指し、天然物質からの情報解読、原位置条件下での摩擦実験、水熱実験による続成反応の解明、実験結果のまとめと世界各地の沈み込み帯へのフィードバックを行う。本研究により、プレート沈み込み帯の地震活動を物質科学的な視点から統一的に理解することが可能になり、地震リスク評価への将来的な貢献が期待される。

Outline of Final Research Achievements

The frictional properties of materials in subduction zones, along with the effects of diagenesis and fluids on earthquakes, were systematically investigated. Specifically, sediment and accretionary prism samples from the Nankai Trough and Japan Trench were collected during research cruises and analyzed for their physical properties and chemical compositions. Sandbox experiments were conducted to evaluate how friction and topography at plate boundaries influence the deformation of accretionary prisms. In addition, high-temperature and high-pressure friction experiments clarified how diagenesis affects the frictional behavior of sediments. The distribution of quartz vein-rich zones, considered terrestrial analogs of slow earthquakes, was studied, and the characteristics of seismic wave radiation were modeled. Analysis of reaction zones at the crust-mantle boundary and associated fluid activity highlighted the importance of mineralogical transformations and elemental transport.

本研究は、沈み込み帯の物質科学(反応・物性変化)と地球物理観測をつなぐという学術的意義を持ち、固体地球科学およびジオハザードに関連する研究へのインパクト・波及効果が期待される。沈み込む物質の空間分布と続成作用を組み込んだ断層の摩擦特性を世界各地の沈み込み帯に適用することにより、物質科学的視点から地震の空間分布が予測できると期待され、これは将来的に世界の沈み込み帯の地震リスク評価と防災・減災に繋がるという点で社会的意義がある。
