Outline of Research at the Start

良好な生態環境を持つ空間を物理的に滅失させる貧酸素水塊は世界で増加し,今後も増加すると予測されているが,その予測もまた不完全である.本研究は,近年の気象変動や瀬戸内海の水質改善の影響を受ける大阪湾と,水質改善の一方,水草の増加による生態系の変化や気温・水温上昇の影響を受ける湖沼において,それら近年の変化に着目しながら,貧酸素化機構の解明を行う.この際,データ同化技術による数値モデルの性能低下要因の追求と,高精細化や新たなモデルの導入による再現性向上,新たな測定技術を用いた酸素生産消費に関する実験及び現地調査を実施することにより,これまでとは異なる新たなアプローチで,貧酸素「像」に迫る.

Outline of Final Research Achievements

This research developed a method for estimating model parameters of a hydrodynamic-water quality model while improving the model performance of hypoxia, which is a major environmental problem in lakes and coastal seas where weather and material cycles have been changing in recent years, using a latest data assimilation that improves numerical calculation results using observed data. This method improves not only the model performance but also the model itself. For lakes, simulation of flow and water quality was improved together with an atmospheric model. By conducting field surveys in parallel, prediction of the hypoxia dynamics in the future under climate change was conducted.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

下水道整備が進むなど,水域外からの栄養塩流入が減少し,水質全体としては改善が進む一方で,生物の生息域を物理的に奪う貧酸素水塊は2000年以降も大きく改善されていない.本研究は貧酸素水塊に対し,必要な現地調査を実施しつつ,一方で数値モデルによる高度な解析を実施したことで,その形成や消滅過程についてより高精度に解析した点で新しい.また,純粋に学術面としても,台風の予測など,予測精度の向上に使われることの多いデータ同化を,水質モデルの改良に貢献する技術として構築した点が非常に有用である.
