Outline of Research at the Start

本研究は、二酸化炭素に対して高い吸着能力を持つ担体と高活性な金属触媒との複合体を作製することで効率的な電解合成を行える触媒開発とその普遍的な触媒反応メカニズムの解明を目指す。また、走査型電気化学セル顕微鏡を用いて幾何学構造(例えば担体と触媒の界面)と電気化学データを同時計測することで幾何学構造と電気化学データが実空間で対応付けを行い、第一原理計算と合わせて二酸化炭素吸着能力と反応中間体の挙動を理解する。更に、二酸化炭素の吸着能力が高い触媒を用いることで気体の二酸化炭素を直接原料として電解することが可能なフロー型電解合成セルの開発を行う。

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

持続可能な二酸化炭素排出量の削減を可能とする二酸化炭素リサイクル技術確立に向けて、再生可能エネルギー由来の電力を用いた電気化学的二酸化炭素還元による有用な化成品(メタン、メタノール、ギ酸など)や合成燃料(e-fuel)を製造できる化学的固定化技術の開発が求められている。本研究は、前年度に引き続いて化成品電解合成効率を向上させるための要素研究を実施し、特に電解合成時の選択率を大幅に低下させる主原因とされる水素発生の抑制メカニズム解明について重点的に研究を行った。本研究目的を達成させるために試作した走行型電気化学セル顕微鏡と第一原理計算を用いて、幾何学構造(エッジやテラスなど)や卑金属種(電気化学的水素発生が得意な金属と不得意な金属)に依存した副反応の水素発生が促進または抑制される反応メカニズムの詳細を世界で初めて明らかとした。この特殊な顕微鏡を用いて実験的に可視化した触媒設計指針は日本人博士課程2年生を筆頭著者とし、論文発表を行い、プレスリリースを通じて研究成果の社会還元に努めた。また、上記の触媒反応メカニズムの解明に加えて、気体フロー型電解合成セルの動作試験を行った。従来の気体二酸化炭素を飽和させた電解液を使用する液体フロー型電解合成セル性能と本気体フロー型ギ酸電解合成セル性能を比較したセル実験結果から、気体二酸化炭素を流したほうが気体二酸化炭素で飽和させた液体を流したときよりも小さい電圧で大きな電流値が得られた。これらの検討結果から、気体フロー型電解合成セルは液体フロー型電解合成セルよりも高いファラデー効率を出せる可能性があることを証明し、気体フロー型電解合成セルの要素研究を進めることができた。
