Outline of Research at the Start

本研究の概要は、ゲノムに制御される生理活性物質の個体変異を明らかにし、個体レベルの自然選択や性選択に及ぼす影響まで解析することである。動植物を問わず生物の基本的な多くの行動は「動き」に集約される。対捕食者戦略(自然選択)や繁殖戦略(性選択)を司る基礎的な行動形質の多くは「生物の動き」によって決まる。「動き」をつかさどる遺伝生理・ゲノム基盤が、生物個体の適応度と個体間相互作用(対捕食者戦略、交尾戦略)にどう関わるのかを明らかにする。

Outline of Final Research Achievements

The aim is to identify individual variation in genome-regulated bioactive substances and to analyse their effects on natural selection and even sexual selection at the individual level. Many basic behaviours of organisms, whether plants or animals, are summed up in ‘movement’. Many of the basic behavioural traits that govern predator-prey strategies (natural selection) and reproductive strategies (sexual selection) are determined by ‘movement’. The beetle Tribolium castaneum was used as the main model to clarify how the genetic physiology and genomic basis of ‘movement’ is related to individual fitness and individual interactions (anti-predator strategies, mating strategies). Based also on the results ofT ranscriptomic analysis, we measured the degree of adaptation of individuals in which dopamine-related genes in the tyrosine metabolic system were knocked down as target genes.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

対捕食回避戦略や交尾戦略など生物の生存戦略に関われる行動の多くは、その生物の動く・動かないという行動の意思決定をベースにする。生物の動きを司るゲノムを操作し生存の上での有利不利を比較する研究は行動・生態の基礎研究として世界的にも新しい学問領域である。本研究ではモデルとして不動行動の適応的な意義(=死んだふりをすることで捕食者に食べられず、適応度上有利になること)が解明されている甲虫をモデルにして、擬死行動と歩行活動を左右する分子メカニズムの解明を行った。これまで表面に現れる行動について生存における有利不利を扱ってきた行動生態学に対して分子基盤に基づいた解析を行うことで新しい研究領域を開拓した。
