Outline of Research at the Start

健康診断の測定項目でもある尿酸は、その体内量を適切に維持することが高尿酸血症や痛風の予防・健康維持にとって重要です。尿酸の体内動態制御には、尿酸輸送体の働きが必須であることが知られていますが、2010年代初頭までに見出された尿酸輸送体だけでは、その全容の説明は困難であり、未知の尿酸輸送体の存在が確実視されていました。私たちは、ごく最近、生理的に重要な尿酸輸送体を新たに見いだすことに成功しており、将来的な医療への応用や尿酸動態制御機構の全容理解にむけて、本研究ではその成果をさらに発展させていく計画です。

Outline of Final Research Achievements

Uric acid, the final product of purine metabolism in humans, should be maintained at appropriate levels in our body for maintaining healthy condition and preventing hyperuricemia and gout. Accumulating evidence indicates that urate transporters are essential for urate handling in humans; however, previously-identified urate transporters cannot explain the whole picture of the urate regulating systems, suggesting that the presence of latent urate transporters. Thus, uncovering such machineries, deeper understanding of the function and physiological role of urate transporters, and their functional regulation have been important issues in a life science field. To address this point, we planned this research project. Our findings will expand our understanding on the regulatory systems on urate handling and accelerate further studies.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

健康診断の測定項目でもある尿酸は、その体内量を適切に保つことが健康状態を維持するうえで重要である。尿酸の体内動態制御には尿酸輸送体の働きが必須であることが知られており、本研究を通じて得られた成果はそれら輸送体分子の機能・生理的役割・制御方法に関する理解を深めるものである。これらの知見は、学術的な発展のみならず、関連する疾患の予防・治療戦略の立案にも役立つと考えられ、ゲノム情報に基づく個別化医療の実現や新たな尿酸降下薬の創製、食事を介した尿酸値の制御に役立つ機能性食品の開発などにつながる可能性を秘めていることから、今後のさらなる発展が期待される。
