| Outline of Research at the Start |
国立公園や世界自然遺産といった保護地域に指定・登録されると、優れた景観や生態系などが保護されるようになる。ただし保護地域内では、修験、講、林野開発、狩猟・採取活動も行われてきた。種々の規制などによって優れた自然が保護される一方で、付随した歴史・文化的資産も守られてきたのか、むしろ消失してきたのかについて明らかにするのが本研究の狙いである。さらに教育資源や観光資源として長期的に利用する事がどの程度可能なのかについても検討する。こうした知見を踏まえつつ、現場レベルから林野・環境・文化財行政に政策提言していく。

| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
Through analysis of postcards and other materials, it was found that there is a trend towards increased interest in the pristine natural resources themselves, rather than in the lifestyle and culture of the mountain villages and remote island regions with protected areas.From the field survey, it was confirmed that residents and local authorities are taking the initiative in re-evaluating and preserving cultural assets.However, it was found that even in cases where tourism is being developed with continuous support from local authorities and others, the situation is economically difficult.Other potential challenges included the loss of remains due to frequent natural disasters and complex land ownership.In order to ensure sustainable conservation, public authorities are expected to provide financial support and act as intermediaries to coordinate stakeholders.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
研究成果の一部を、千葉県立中央博物館令和5年度秋の展示「手のひらのメディアー吉澤貞一マッチラベルコレクション」（2023年10月3日～12月24日）で公開した。同様に、屋久島町立屋久杉自然館特別展の大屋久杉展（2024年7月20日～2025年3月31日）においても、研究成果の一部を公開した。このほかに、林業経済学会2024年秋季大会（九州大学）において、テーマ別セッション「森林・草地・山の利用・保全をめぐる多様な文化」を研究代表者らが企画して、森林文化資産の保全に関する最新の研究動向を発表し、情報共有を行った。
