本研究は、ハマダラ蚊(Anopheles)が媒介で感染するマラリアに焦点をあて、文理融合の学際研究により、①日本占領期インドネシアの医療・防疫を理解すること、②マラリア予防や衛生に対する政策や周知指導を詳らかにしながら、政策や指針を策定するにあたった当時の実状と、医療・衛生政策実践後の社会や生活の変化を理解することを目的とする。 独創的な点としては、日本占領期インドネシア研究において、政策と生活を結びつける「医療・衛生」という新たな領域に着目したことであり、マラリアというパンデミックを探求することで、医療のみならず、政治、経済、文化、社会生活を詳らかにすると考えたことである。

| Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
Research focused on analyzing medical policies and practices of military administrations, examining health guidance and community initiatives, and developing a better holistic picture of Indonesian society. Utilizing official documents, propaganda films and other historical materials, this year’s research elucidated efforts in schools and in urban areas. Especially important are differences between regions within each military administration, and differences in responses of the 25th Army, 16th Army and Navy administrations, which will require expanded research. Initial indications show differences in policies over time, and that methods of medical education, dissemination of knowledge, manufacturing and distribution of pharmaceuticals, and the cultural context of diseases and medical care were important. In and around one particular location examined, the city of Semarang, experienced endemic malaria, and significant efforts to combat malaria in local society were observed. Main points of comprehensive research are antimalarial drugs, public health and epidemic prevention, doctor, nurse and malaria technician education, medical research institutes, malaria parasites and mosquitoes, traditional medicine and medicinal herbs, and awareness activities for malaria prevention. While prewar malaria research in Indonesia continued during the war, research indicates that the Japanese Army and Navy also engaged in malaria research from the 1920s-1944, however, military medical journal articles included only limited Southeast Asian research.
