Outline of Research at the Start

核ゲノムを対象とする古代DNA分析は技術的に困難で、東アジアの新石器時代犬の遺伝的系統はまだ解明されていない。本研究は、縄文時代のイヌが東アジアの最古の家畜犬の系統に連なると考え、縄文犬の全ゲノム塩基配列決定を行い、日本列島と東アジアの初期のイヌの特徴を、形態、食性、遺伝的系統などから多角的に明らかにする。さらに、イヌの祖先が伴侶動物としてヒトとの関係を深めることをを可能にした行動遺伝子についても探る。日本の遺跡出土犬の、核の全ゲノム塩基配列決定による系統解析をすすめ、比較対象として中国の遺跡出土犬の核ゲノム分析を行い、最初期の東アジアの家畜犬の系統と日本列島に導入された犬の系統を解明する。

Outline of Final Research Achievements

East Asia is considered to be one of the origins of domestic dogs. In order to clarify the domestication process of dogs, we carried out ancient DNA analysis of dog remains excavated from Jomon sites. Whole genome analysis revealed that the Jomon dogs belong to the oldest dog lineage in the world that did not mix with dogs of the West Eurasian lineage. The Jomon dog genome contains 9-11% of the ancestral genome of the Japanese wolf. Our research also showed that the most likely origin of the canine lineage is East Eurasia. We also examined the changes in canine diet in the increasing symbiotic relationships between humans and canines during the early stages of domestication. There is a possibility of parallel evolution between the diet of Japanese dogs and the Japanese food culture that depends heavily on marine resources. Differences between Japanese and Western dog breeds in their way of communication with humans were also indicated.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

最古の家畜であり、ヒトの伴侶動物であり続けてきたイヌの起源と家畜化の過程に関する社会的関心は高い。本研究は、縄文犬およびニホンオオカミの古代ゲノムから、イヌの家畜化起源が東ユーラシアにある可能性が高いことを示し、日本列島のイヌのゲノムの変遷に弥生時代以降の人類の移動や渡来が関わってきたことを明らかにした。ヒトとの共生関係を進展させた家畜化の過程で、イヌが他の家畜と異なる点は、ヒトとのコミュニケーション能力を発達させ、ヒトの食性への適応を遂げたことである。気質、食性、行動の変化に関し、イヌがヒトによる選択を受けた、あるいは適応的な遺伝変化を獲得したことが示された。
