Outline of Research at the Start

年輪年代法は、木材の暦年代を1年のズレもなく正確に決定できるため、他の年代測定法よりも精度の点で優れている。しかし、木材の年輪数が少ない場合、年代が定まらないという問題がある。遺跡から出土する多数の木材は年輪数が50年に満たないため、これらの年輪年代を決定できれば飛躍的に分析対象が広がる。本研究では、1)年輪数の少ない考古材の年代決定のための年層内同位体比データの収集、および、2)現生木を用いた年層内変動メカニズムの基礎的研究を行い、3)以上の成果を統合して年層内分析による年代決定法を確立する。以上のデータを用いて、気温と降水量の同時復元にも挑戦する。

Outline of Final Research Achievements

An intra-annual dataset of tree-ring oxygen isotope was constructed to improve the performance of tree-ring dating. Pattern matching tests based on samples with known ages against the intra-annual tree-ring dataset showed higher correlations compared to the conventional method based on an annually-resolved tree-ring data, indicating that the intra-annual approach is promising as a new indicator for age determination. This study made it possible to narrow down candidate ages when collaborating the intra-annual approach with the conventional method. I also addressed a problem that the narrower the annual ring width, the more physically difficult it becomes to divide the annual ring into many parts. Specifically, I devised a method of simply dividing an annual ring into two parts and calculating the difference of oxygen isotopes between the two parts. This method can simplify the process of dating while maintaining the performance of tree-ring dating.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

これまでの1年単位での酸素同位体比年輪年代法では年代決定に至らなかった年輪数の少ない考古材の年代を正確に決定するため、年層内2分割法という新しい分析法を本研究で提案した。出土材の中には、樹皮が付いていて転用の可能性がない、つまり遺跡年代と年輪年代が確実に一致する木材が膨大に含まれている。今回の年層内分析によるアプローチは、こうした出土材をまとめて年代決定の対象にできるため、考古学研究における汎用性が高い。
