Outline of Research at the Start

本研究では,中性子ラジオグラフィによる高解像度・高時間分解画像診断を可能にするべく,高出力短パルスレーザーを用いた超短パルス点中性子源の開発,及びその応用技術の確立に挑む.特に,研究代表者らがこれまでに開発してきたレーザーの一方向照射による「爆縮不要の慣性核融合方式」をさらに発展させることで,ピコ秒・ミクロスケールの高輝度「点」中性子源の生成を実証する.また,中性子線の連続供給までを見据えた中性子発生原理の最適化,ターゲット・計測技術の改良を重ねることで,高輝度かつ実用的な短パルス点中性子源の実現を目指す.

Outline of Final Research Achievements

A monodirectional-drive inertial confinement fusion (ICF) scheme has been investigated to develop a pulsed point neutron source for high-resolution neutron imaging. The scheme is based on the laser-plasma interaction inside a spherical deuterated plastic capsule, that drives nearly symmetric plasma ablation or sheath acceleration initiating spherical plasma convergence. The proposed scheme is robust to significant laser drive asymmetry, allowing to drive ICF with a single laser beam. This so-called “implosion-free ICF” has opened up new prospects in neutron applications such as material-selective imaging, multi-element analysis by n-gamma spectroscopy.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

従来の慣性核融合方式では,ターゲットを高密度に圧縮(爆縮)するために膨大な数のレーザーを球対称に配置しなければならず,装置の巨大化が多様な応用展開の障壁となっていた.本研究によってレーザー配位が劇的に簡素化されたことで,準単色の高輝度短パルス点中性子源としての新たな応用展望が開けた.核融合分野では中性子ラジオグラフィによる爆縮プラズマのイオン密度計測,産業分野ではX線と中性子のマルチモードラジオグラフィによる材料マッピングや,放射化元素分析法による爆薬検知などへの応用が期待される.このように,本研究は核融合研究の裾野拡大に寄与するものであり,産業界を巻き込んだ分野の活性化を期待する.
