Outline of Research at the Start

場の量子論は量子多体系を調べるための普遍的な枠組みである.しかし,理論が強結合であったりしたときに直接的な物理量の計算が困難であることがしばしばある.そのような場合でも,理論が対称性を持つときにはそれに基づいて理論の性質を調べられる場合がある.近年,その対称性という基本的な概念そのものが刷新され,場の理論に今まで見つかっていない多くの共通する性質が存在することが明らかになってきた.本研究ではそれらの一般化された対称性の性質とその応用を議論する.

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

前年度に引き続き,一般化された対称性をキーワードに場の量子論の非摂動的な現象についての研究を行った.強結合領域における場の理論を実際に解こうとすると数値計算や様々な近似に頼らざるを得ないが,対称性にもとづいた考察により得られた物理現象がモデルの特殊性によるものなのか幅広い理論に共通する現象なのかを系統的に考察することができるようになる.
本年度の大きな成果の一つは,4次元ゲージ理論におけるWilson-'t Hooftによる閉じ込め現象の分類を1形式対称性と呼ばれる一般化対称性の自発的破れと対称性に守られたトポロジカル(SPT)相の観点から系統的に導出したことである.これまでの導出は閉じ込め現象を説明する特定の模型に基づいている部分があり,場の理論自体の分類定理なのか特定のダイナミクスを仮定したときの分類法なのかが不明瞭であった.本導出では,4次元理論が1形式対称性をもち質量ギャップが開いているという仮定のもとに一般的に成立する定理としてWilson-'t Hooftの分類法を確立することができた.
また,本研究では強結合領域のゲージ理論の閉じ込め現象を一般化対称性の背景ゲージ場をいれたコンパクト化により弱結合領域でその定性的性質を前年度に開発していた.本年度はそれをbifundamental QCDという量子色力学の亜種に適用して,その真空構造を具体的に調べることができた.特にこの模型はlarge-Nオービフォルド等価性という非超対称でありながら超対称ゲージ理論と等価になる可能性が提案されており,本研究によりその提案が妥当であることを示すことができた.
他にも格子理論における磁気モノポールを上手くコントロールし,磁気的対称性を用いたアノマリーを格子理論として確立するなど,ゲージ理論の電磁双対性の理解につながる成果を上げることができた.

Reason

これまで広く用いられてきた閉じ込め状態の分類法について,一般化された対称性の観点から見直すことで場の理論がもつ定理としてその分類法を強く確立することができたのは一般化された対称性の非摂動現象への応用可能性を示唆する興味深い研究になったと考えている.また,前年度開発した新しい場の理論の計算手法を応用して,QCD型理論の真空構造を決定できたことはこの研究を着実に発展させられていることを意味すると考える.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

一般化された対称性をもつ場の理論に広く応用できる定理を見つけることは,非摂動的現象を理解するうえで強力な道具となるので本年度の成果で得た経験を活用してその方向性をより探っていきたい.
また,強結合理論の定性的性質を保存するように弱結合理論に持っていく手法はQCD型理論に対して非常にうまく働くことがわかってきた.その背後にある理由を探ることでより広いクラスの場の理論に対して適用できるような手法に育てていきたい.
