Outline of Research at the Start

超冷中性子を用いた中性子電気双極子モーメント探索に用いるための偏極解析器を開発する。超冷中性子の偏極解析は磁気飽和した鉄薄膜が作る磁気ポテンシャルによるスピン依存透過率を用いて行われる。スピンフリッパーと組み合わせることにより、異なるスピン状態の超冷中性子数を計測することのできる検出器を製作する。製作したスピン解析器はTUCAN実験に用いられる。

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

中性子電気双極子モーメント(EDM)探索は電磁場中に置かれた中性子のスピン歳差運動周期を精密に測定することで行われる。この測定には運動エネルギーが300 neV未満の超冷中性子(UCN: Ultra-Cold Neutron)が用いられる。UCNのスピン偏極および偏極解析は磁場ポテンシャルを用いて行われる。中性子は磁気モーメントを持ち、磁場から60 neV/Tの磁気ポテンシャルを感じる。磁気飽和した鉄は2 Tの内部磁化を持ち、また210 neVの物質ポテンシャルを持つため、UCNはそのスピン方向によって90 neVまたは330 neVのポテンシャルを感じることとなる。そのため、鉄薄膜に入射するUCNの運動エネルギーを90 neVから330 neVとした場合、片方向のスピン成分のUCNは鉄薄膜で反射されるがもう片方向のスピン成分は透過する。Adiabatic Fast Passage法によるスピン反転器を用い、ON/OFFを制御することで透過させるスピン成分を選択することが可能である。
これまでに電磁石を用いた鉄薄膜磁化装置、スピン反転器を開発し、鉄薄膜の最適化を行っている。鉄薄膜をアルミニウム箔やシリコン基板の上に形成し、冷中性子やUCNを用いて偏極解析能の試験を行ってきた。偏極解析能やUCNの透過率を考慮し、鉄薄膜の厚さは90 nmが最適であることを見出した。また、鉄薄膜を磁気飽和させるための外部磁場を変化させることによる偏極解析能の差異を測定し、十分は偏極解析能を持たせるために必要な外部磁場の大きさを定めることができた。

Reason

これまでにスピン偏極解析器に必要な鉄磁化薄膜に最適な膜厚、および十分な偏極解析能を出すために必要な外部磁場の下限値を見出すこと成功している。これをもとに装置を小型化するための永久磁石を用いたセットアップの設計を進める。Adiabatic Fast Passage法を用いたスピン反転器を2台作成し、その性能評価も行っており、スピン解析器実機作成のための準備が整った。
JRR-3のMINE2ビームラインおよびJ-PARC物質・生命科学研究所BL05のパルス超冷中性子源を用いた試験システムの構築も完了しており、実機作成後の性能評価試験体制も整っている。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

これまでに見出した条件による鉄薄膜の形成条件、外部磁場を作るための永久磁石設計による実機作成を行う。作成した実機はJ-PARC物質・生命科学研究所のパルス超冷中性子源を用いて性能評価を行う。
これまでの試験で鉄薄膜を形成する基板にアルミ基板もしくはシリコン基板を用いてきた。UCN吸収断面積および散乱断面積をもとに計算したUCN透過率がアルミ基板の場合、小さく測定された。UCNが物質を透過する際、その物質の表面粗さによって透過率が異なることが報告されている。アルミ基板の場合はシリコン基板に比べ表面粗さが大きいためこの影響によるものと考えられる。異なる表面粗さのアルミ基板、シリコン基板のUCN透過率を測定し、UCN透過率の高い基板を選定する。
