Outline of Research at the Start

太陽系に存在する鉄より重い元素は、主に遅い中性子捕獲反応(s過程)と急速な中性子捕獲反応過程(r過程)で生成されたと考えられているが、未解明な点も多い。従来の加速器を用いた実験には制限がある。一方、近年発達しているレーザー駆動粒子は、連続エネルギー、短パルスなどの宇宙における粒子スペクトルに近似している。本研究では、大強度レーザーを用いて、恒星内のエネルギー分布を模擬したレーザー駆動中性子を生成し、そのエネルギースペクトルを計測すると同時に既知の試料の放射化実験で確認することをも目的とする。

Outline of Final Research Achievements

About 99% of the elements heavier than iron were synthesized by slow neutron capture reactions (s-process) and rapid neutron capture process (r-process). Thus, the study of the stellar neutron induced reactions is of importance for understanding of the origin of these elements. Advances in high-power laser science have provided acceleration of particles with energies from MeV to GeV, and neutrons could be also generated by the secondary reactions. We have generated high flux neutrons using LFEX laser at Osaka University and studied the nuclear astrophysics using the neutrons. Neutrons were generated reactions on a Be target with the protons and deuterons accelerated by high power laser. The energy spectra and cross sections were measured using time-of-flight and activation methods.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

元素の起源を解明する研究は、主に地上において加速器を用いた原子核反応の研究によってされてきた。現在も不安定核ビームを中心に主流の技術である。その一方で、恒星プラズマ内の原子核反応では、原子核の励起状態に対する原子核反応、電子スクリーニング効果、基底状態と核異性体の遷移などが発生するために、地上の実験条件とは異なる。そのため、理論計算による補正の依存度が高い。不確定が高い理論計算に対して、直接的な実験が大強度レーザーで可能になると予想されており、世界で研究が開始されようという状況である。その潮流の中で、世界に先駆けてレーザー中性子による宇宙核物理の基礎研究を開始した点は重要である。
