Outline of Research at the Start

地球の熱圏大気（高度100-300 km）の正確な把握の鍵を握る現象がオーロラによる極域熱圏の加熱と膨張である。これまでの理論・シミュレーション研究によって、この加熱と膨張の定量的理解の根源は数十～百km規模（メソスケール）のオーロラと電離圏イオン速度の空間構造にあることが示された。しかし観測実証はできていない。本研究は電離圏を測定するEISCAT_3D、熱圏を測定する大型光学干渉計（SDI）、高分解能全天カメラ網からなる、世界最高水準の観測装置群を使い、世界初となる電離圏・熱圏・オーロラの同時・イメージング測定を行う。そしてメソスケール構造が極域熱圏を加熱・膨張させるメカニズムを解明する。
