Outline of Research at the Start

地球の熱圏大気(高度100-300 km)の正確な把握の鍵を握る現象がオーロラによる極域熱圏の加熱と膨張である。これまでの理論・シミュレーション研究によって、この加熱と膨張の定量的理解の根源は数十~百km規模(メソスケール)のオーロラと電離圏イオン速度の空間構造にあることが示された。しかし観測実証はできていない。本研究は電離圏を測定するEISCAT_3D、熱圏を測定する大型光学干渉計(SDI)、高分解能全天カメラ網からなる、世界最高水準の観測装置群を使い、世界初となる電離圏・熱圏・オーロラの同時・イメージング測定を行う。そしてメソスケール構造が極域熱圏を加熱・膨張させるメカニズムを解明する。

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

本研究はオーロラによる極域熱圏の加熱(温度上昇)と膨張(上昇流発生と水平風加速)との関係を観測データから解き明かすことを目的としている。これまでの理論・シミュレーション研究によって、この加熱と膨張の定量的理解の根源は数十~百km規模(メソスケール)のオーロラと電離圏イオン速度の空間構造にあることが示された。しかし電離圏・熱圏・オーロラの同時高分解能観測(とりわけ熱圏観測)の難しさから、観測実証はできていない。
本事業の開始以降、北欧で運用する光学干渉計(FPI)、オーロラカメラ(ASI)、欧州非干渉散乱レーダー(EISCAT)を用いた観測実験を実施してきた。その活動で取得したデータとともに、過去10年以上にわたり蓄積された観測データの解析を行った。
本科研費予算を用いて北欧の観測施設を訪問し、メンテナンスを行うことで装置を最良の状態に維持した。その結果、継続的に良好なデータを取得できた。1-2年後に本格運用が始まるEISCAT_3Dレーダーとのより良い共同観測体制を構築するために、本科研費予算を使って人員を現地に派遣し、光学観測装置の設置拠点を移動させた。
観測実験およびアーカイブされたデータの解析研究から、例えば、熱圏風速の地磁気活動度と惑星間空間磁場に対する依存性、磁気嵐に伴う過去最大の風速を査読付き誌上論文に発表した。これら以外にも成果リストに記載したように多数の論文・学会発表を本科研費予算を用いて実施した。

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

当初計画は、2023年度前期(計画年度2年目)までに既存データの解析を通して、同年度後期から始まる SDI-EISCAT_3D-ASI総合観測実験の計画立案を実施することになっていた。既存データの解析と観測計画の立案は、概ね予定通りに進められた。一方、SDIとEISCAT_3Dの観測開始が遅れており、2023年度後期に実施予定だった観測活動は、予定の一部しかできなかった。
しかし、3機設置するSDIの内、1機の設置が2023年度末に完了し、観測を開始できた。残り2機の設置と観測開始を2024年8-9月に行えられる目途を2023年度中に立てることができた。EISCAT_3Dの運用開始は2024年度以降になるものの、現行のEISCATレーダーがそれまで稼働するので、SDIが full scale 観測を始める 2024年9月以降は、現行レーダーを用いた総合観測を実施し、2024年度の研究目標を達成させる。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

2024年度始め(4-5月)に北欧の観測拠点および共同研究機関を訪問し、2024年9月に開始するSDIを用いた総合観測実験の準備(装置の運用体制や観測モードの確認)を行う。またEISCATレーダー運用時間の申請を実施する。2024年7-8月にノルウェーで開催される国際学会に参加し、これまでに本事業で得られた解析結果を発表する。その後、フィンランドを訪問し、2機のSDIを含む装置の設置作業を行い、それ以降の毎年冬から春まで観測装置を運用する。
2024年5月と11月に開催される国内学会、2024年12月に米国で開催される国際学会で成果発表を行う。
