Outline of Research at the Start

過去に液体の水(海)を保持していた火星は、表層水の消失と共に寒冷化・乾燥化していったことが明らかとなっている。本研究では、表層圏(水・大気)の記録媒体である炭酸塩に着目し、火星隕石および火星アナログ試料の炭酸塩に含まれる水素・炭素・酸素同位体比測定および酸化還元敏感元素である硫黄の化学種同定を行う。得られた化学データを申請者らにより開発された大気・表層水散逸モデルに適用することで、惑星表層環境・水環境システムを記述するうえで必須な指標である表層水量と表層酸化程度(大気酸素分圧など)の変遷を定量化する。

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

本研究計画は、炭酸塩の地球化学的解析に基づき、火星表層に存在した流体の「【計画1】化学組成: Eh・pH・溶存イオン濃度(HCO3-, SO42-など)」、「【計画2】同位体組成:水素(D/H)・炭素(13C/12C)・酸素(17,18O/16O)」および、これら地球化学データを組み込んだ表層水・大気散逸計算に基づき、「【計画3】表層水の消失量と表層酸化(大気酸素分圧)との関連性」を明らかにする。
2023年度は、2022年度に引き続き、研究計画調書に記載の【研究計画1】に関し、火星隕石および標準物質の硫黄XAFS分析データの解釈を進めた。また、2022年度までに行った成果の論文化を進めた。本論文では、火星隕石に含まれる炭酸塩中の硫黄が、有機硫黄および大部分が硫酸イオンとして炭酸塩の炭酸イオンを構造的に置換した形で存在していることが明らかとなった。本研究結果は、査読付き原著論文として国際誌EPSLに出版された(Kajitani et al. 2023)。また、【計画2】に関連し、火星アナログ物質の試料準備を進めた。加えて、火星アナログ物質より得られたデータをもとに、熱力学計算を実施し、水-岩石反応に関し、水/岩石比・反応温度・二酸化炭素分圧などの条件を決定した。

最終年度である2024年度は、これまでに取得した硫黄化学種データの論文化に加え、「【計画2】同位体組成:水素(D/H)・炭素(13C/12C)・酸素(17,18O/16O)」のうち、データ取得できた炭素・酸素同位体に関し論文化を進める。
