Outline of Research at the Start

本研究は,波動擾乱とその背景場との相互作用を定量的に評価可能なものの高・低気圧を別個に扱えない「オイラー的統計手法」,逆に高・低気圧の別個の記述は可能だが相互作用の定量的評価が困難な「ラグランジュ的追跡法」とを世界で初めて融合させた申請者らの斬新な解析手法を駆使し,大気波動擾乱と偏西風の相互作用の理解を格段に深化させるものである.この新手法は偏西風の強い上層でも個々の高・低気圧性渦を同定可能なため,地表から対流圏上層まで波動擾乱の活動度,熱・運動量輸送,波束伝播,背景場へのフィードバック,エネルギー変換などについて,高・低気圧渦からの寄与を初めて分離し,各々3次元的な評価を初めて行う.

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

① 従来の「オイラー的統計手法」に基づく種々の力学診断法,即ち波動擾乱の活動度や熱・運動量輸送,波動擾乱と背景場とのエネルギー変換,波束伝播を表す波活動度flux(E-P fluxを含む),波動擾乱からの背景場へのフィードバック(FB)強制の3次元的評価に申請者らの新手法を適用し,これらの評価における高・低気圧性渦からの極性別の寄与など,従来得られなかった新らたな基本的知見を導き,それに関する論文を国際学術誌に投稿した.
② 北太平洋域では,移動性擾乱活動が偏西風強度の最大となる真冬に却って抑制されるという季節変化が特徴的である.「傾圧不安定理論」と矛盾するこの特異な擾乱活動の季節性のメカニズムを解明すべく,申請者らの新解析手法から高・低気圧からの寄与を分離した.その結果,低気圧の頻度は真冬に最大となるに対し,真冬に頻度が極小となるのは従来看過されてきた移動性高気圧であり,その形成が真冬の日本海で強く抑制されることを突き止め,その成果論文を国際学術誌に投稿した.

Reason

従来の「オイラー的統計手法」に基づく波動擾乱の活動度や熱・運動量輸送,波動擾乱と背景場とのエネルギー変換,波束伝播を表す波活動度flux,波動擾乱からの背景場へのフィードバック(FB)強制の3次元的評価に申請者らの新手法を適用して得られた新らたな知見に関する論文を予定通り国際学術誌に投稿できた.さらに,新解析手法に基づき,北太平洋域での移動性擾乱活動の特異な季節性のメカニズムについても従来看過されてきた移動性高気圧の本質的な寄与を見出し,その成果論文を予定通り国際学術誌に投稿できた.但し,投稿論文の査読者から新手法に関する疑義や誤解が呈され,その対応に時間を要したことから,年度内の論文発表には至らなかった。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

投稿した成果論文の発表が少しでも早くできるよう,論文に対する疑義・誤解にきちんと対応する.また,北太平洋域での移動性擾乱活動の特異な季節性の解明に向けては,地表の高低気圧のみならず,上空の擾乱にも新手法を適用し,対流圏全体のエネルギー収支への高気圧・低気圧別の寄与を評価して,メカニズムの全容解明に繋げる解析を進める必要がある。さらに,暖流と寒流の合流域である中緯度海洋前線帯に沿って移動性擾乱の活動が活発なストームトラックが形成されることが知られているが,顕著な水温勾配に高気圧・低気圧がどう応答するかの評価にも新手法を適用する予定である.
