Outline of Research at the Start

本研究の目的は、急速に進む北極温暖化の予測において重要な混相雲(水雲粒子と氷雲粒子 が共存した雲)が、「どのようなメカニズムによ
り安定して維持されているのか」という問いに答えることである。本研究では北極域で唯一となる雲微物理量の連続観測を山岳観測所において
実施し、統計的データに基づき北極混相雲の基本的な動態を明らかにする。そして混相雲の安定性の鍵と考えられる、氷雲粒子を生成するエア
ロゾル(氷晶核)と氷雲粒子との対応関係を調べ、降雪による氷晶核除去過程や氷粒子の2次生成を評価する。これらの観測的知見に基づいて
雲微物理モデルを改良することにより、混相雲が安定して維持されるメカニズムの解明を目指す。

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

本研究の目的は、急速に進む北極温暖化の予測において重要な混相雲(水雲粒子と氷雲粒子 が共存した雲)が、「どのような微物理的特徴があり、安定して維持されているのか」という問いに答えることである。本研究では北極域で唯一となる雲微物理量の連続観測と氷晶核数濃度観測を山岳観測所において実施し、統計的データに基づき北極混相雲の基本的な動態を明らかにする。そして混相雲の安定性の鍵と考えられる、氷雲粒子を生成するエアロゾル(氷晶核)と氷雲粒子との対応関係を調べ、降雪による氷晶核除去過程や氷粒子の2次生成を評価する。これらの観測的知見に基づいて雲微物理モデルを改良することにより、混相雲が安定して維持されるメカニズムの解明を目指す。
2023年度も継続してノルウェー領のニーオルスンのゼッペリン山観測所(79°N, 12°E, 海抜474 m)において、雲粒子および降水粒子の直接観測および氷晶核数濃度観測を1年間を通じて実施した。本年度は降水粒子の画像解析を進め、これらの粒子が水滴(球形)であるのか、氷粒子(非球形)であるのかを調べた。また2種類の降水粒子測定装置の間の整合性を調べた。さらに夏季に増大する氷晶核数濃度の季節変動を、雪氷の融解と地表面からの粒子放出の観点から説明した。
2023年度にはまた、数値モデル計算の混層雲の安定性に関わる氷粒子の形状(晶癖)が雲のマクロな構造にどのような影響を与えるのか評価した。この結果、北極の混層雲の数値モデル計算において、氷晶核(エアロゾル)数濃度とともに、氷粒子の形状が鉛直積算雲水量などの雲の構造に少なからぬ影響を与えることを明らかにした。

Reason

2023年度には、計画通りにニーオルスンのゼッペリン山観測所において、雲粒子・降水粒子の直接観測および氷晶核観測を1年間を通じて実施できた。また混層雲の維持・衰退の鍵となる氷粒子の降水について、粒子形状の観点から研究を進めた。数値北極混相雲のモデル計算についても計画どおりに数値計算を実施し、氷粒子の形状の影響を評価した。これらの成果を論文として発表した。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

本研究では、最終年度である2024年度も継続して北極域では世界唯一となる雲微物理量の直接かつ連続的観測を、ニーオルスンのゼッペリン山観測所で実施する。また氷晶核数濃度の継続的な観測も実施する。これらのデータは世界的にも特色のあるデータであり、我々自身が実施する研究以外にも広く活用されることが期待される。
また2024年度は本研究の最終年度であるため、より定量的な議論を進め、研究をまとめる予定である。氷晶核として働くエアロゾルは気温が低くなるほど増加するので、その数濃度は各温度で働く氷晶核数濃度と雲頂気温の2つにより決まる。レーダ・ライダから推定される雲頂高度の気温に加えて大気中の氷晶核として働くエアロゾル数濃度の季節変動が明らかになりつつあるため、この両観測から実大気で働く氷晶核数濃度を推定する。そして雲レーダやライダにより氷を含む雲が出現している時間帯を抽出し、降水粒子と氷晶核の数濃度の対応を調べる。
本研究では、世界最先端の雲微物理モデルAMPSを理化学研究所のSCALE大気モデルに移植した。このモデルを用いて北極混層雲に対する氷晶核数濃度変動の影響や氷粒子形状の影響を評価してきた。2024年度には本研究で観測された氷晶核数濃度と雲微物理量との対応の再現性や混層雲のメカニズムについて調べていく予定である。
