Outline of Research at the Start

日本海溝沿いの巨大地震はどのくらいの間隔で発生し、その発生間隔にはどのくらいのばらつきがあるだろうか?また、それらは時間的・空間的に変化しているのだろうか?本研究では、国際深海科学掘削計画 Expedition 386で日本海溝から採取された長尺海底堆積物コアを用い、詳細なコア分析から各コア内での地震イベント堆積物の認定と層序を確立し、複数の年代指標を統合した年代モデルの構築から地震イベント堆積物のコア間対比と堆積年代決定を行う。そして、日本海溝沿いでの過去数万年間にわたる地震履歴(発生間隔やそのばらつき)を明らかにすることで、日本海溝の地震は時間的・空間的に多様なのかの解明を目指す。

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

日本海溝沿いの巨大地震はどの程度の間隔で発生し、その発生間隔にはどの程度のばらつきがあるだろうか?また、それらは時空間的に変化しているのだろうか?本研究では、IODP Expedition 386で日本海溝から採取された海底堆積物コアを用い、各コア内での地震イベント堆積物の認定と層序の確立、海底堆積物の年代測定に通常使われる有孔虫などの炭酸塩粒子が欠如し、地震時に再堆積が発生する超深海堆積物である海溝底堆積物の正確な層序・年代モデルを、テフラ・微化石・古地磁気・放射性炭素・光ルミネッセンスなどの年代測定手法の統合から構築することが目的となる。この目的のため本年度は、Expedition 386の試料のテフラと放散虫の分析、古地磁気測定、放射性炭素年代測定並びに斜面域のコアの光ルミネッセンス年代測定を進めた。テフラについては既存試料も合わせて分析を進め、基本的な層序を確立させた。放散虫については基準面の年代の見直し作業を行い、サイト毎に基準面の深度を整理した。古地磁気では測定結果と標準的な地磁気永年変動曲線との第一次の対比作業を行った。放射性炭素年代測定は主要ホールについて測定を終了させた。以上の結果は、年度末に集約され、相互確認のために共有された。また、北部日本海溝の表層コアについては短寿命核種での年代測定を実施し、堆積速度と歴史地震に対比可能と考えられるイベント堆積物を認定した。光ルミネッセンス測定は、測定のための試料分取を完了させた。
岩相や堆積構造、物性、化学組成に基づくイベント層/非イベント層の識別と対比については、海外の研究者とも協力して解析作業を進めた。厚いイベント層の認定は比較的容易であるので、これに特化して認定を行うとともに、日本海溝全域にわたる地震イベント堆積物の時空間分布の把握のため、船上データを用いたホール間/サイト間/海盆間の対比の試案を作成した。

Reason

各分析/測定の第一次的結果は得られ、研究グループとして各年代データ間や概略の層序対比結果との確認作業も進んでおり、年代データの統合的な解釈に向けた作業に着手できている。基準面の年代精度を向上させるための近傍の既存試料の収集と追加分析も計画されており、プロジェクトの研究計画の目的達成のため、研究は順調に進展しているといえる。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

最終年度の2024年度は、得られた年代データの相互比較と岩相層序との整合性の確認を行い、統合的な層序・年代モデルの構築を行う。岩相層序確立とこれを用いたサイト間対比の作業は複数の組織・国で行われているため、統合に向けた議論を段階的に進め、より信頼性の高い層序・年代モデルの構築を行う。このため、年代と層序の議論に特化した会議(4月を予定)とExpedition 386の参加者全体の会議(7月を予定)でより広範な議論を行う。さらに、必要に応じて、近傍から採取されている既存コア試料の分析を行い、年代決定精度の向上に努める。これらの結果も踏まえて、各年代データを検証し、個別の論文化を進めるとともに、統合的な層序・年代モデルを構築して、日本海溝域における巨大地震の発生履歴とその時空間的変化を取りまとめる。
