Outline of Research at the Start

本研究課題は,南半球中・高緯度を中心とした世界各地の7地点の海底で掘削回収されたコアで見つかった白亜紀-古第三紀境界(K-Pg境界)の層準について,高解像度で海洋のオスミウムOs同位体分析を行う.これにより,地球史で最も若い巨大陸上洪水玄武岩である白亜紀末のデカントラップの形成開始のタイミングをより正確に特定し,そこから全球海洋への物質供給を追跡する.デカントラップから比較的近距離~中距離(4000~12000 km)の海域のOs同位体記録から洪水玄武岩の噴火開始のタイミングを制約し,遠距離サイト(>12000 km)の堆積物の記録から全海洋へのOs供給の寄与を定量的に評価する.

Outline of Final Research Achievements

High-resolution marine osmium (Os) isotope analyses were conducted on Cretaceous-Paleogene (K-Pg) boundary strata preserved in deep-sea sediment cores and onland outcrop sections, particularly from Southern Hemisphere. These analyses enabled precise determination of the timing of the onset of the Deccan Traps flood basalt volcanism at the end of the Cretaceous and clarified its temporal relationship with the end-Cretaceous Chicxulub impact event.

New Os isotope ratio measurements from sediment cores in the South Atlantic and the northwestern Pacific, combined with revised age models, revealed two distinct negative excursions in the Os isotope record, indicative of two major pulses of flood basalt volcanism at the end of the Cretaceous. Additional analyses from sites in the southeastern Indian Ocean, South Pacific, and equatorial Atlantic further contributed to constructing a detailed record of global Os isotope fluctuations across the K-Pg boundary.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

本研究課題の成果の学術的意義は2つあり,1つは白亜紀末に起こった地球表層の2つの極限イベントであるデカン洪水玄武岩の噴火のタイミングと,チクシュルブ天体衝突のタイミングの関係を明らかにしたこと,もう1つはそれらが海洋堆積物のOs同位体記録にどう保存され,それが化学層序の対比ツールとして使えるかを評価したことである.
また,社会的意義としては,白亜紀末の大量絶滅がチクシュルブ天体衝突により引き起こされたことは疑いようがないものの,その直前のデカン洪水玄武岩の噴火がすでに環境を変化させ,大量絶滅の「下地」を作ったのではないかという科学的疑問に,重要な示唆を与えたことである.
