Outline of Research at the Start

ツキノワグマは秋期の飽食期に蓄えた体脂肪を,冬眠期間中のみならず,冬眠明け後の春から夏にかけても継続して利用する。春から夏は,高栄養で採食効率の良い食物の獲得が難しいためである。そのため,動き回るとエネルギー収支がマイナスになる夏期後半には,活動を停滞させる傾向を突き止めた。一方で,オスはこのような傾向が当てはまらない個体も多い。成獣オスはより多くのメスの獲得と自身の子孫を残すこと,亜成獣オスはより体を大きくすることと安定した自分の行動圏の確保が,行動を決める重要な要素と想像できる。本研究では,オスの齢級に着目しながら,春から秋にかけての行動と生理に関する特徴を個体レベルで明らかにする。

Outline of Final Research Achievements

In the Okutama and Ashio Nikko Mountains, we conducted a study focused on the behavioral ecology of male bears, an area that had not been fully explored, using various new technologies and study equipment, including GPS collars with video cameras. During the study period, we tracked the movements of 13 male bears and examined the relationship between sexual hormones and behavior, as well as the bears' responses to artificial structures. In addition, we investigated the current state of lead exposure in bears, which serve as scavengers in forest ecosystems. While data analysis is still ongoing due to the large volume of data collected, further publications in academic journals are expected in the future.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

本研究は,奥多摩山地では1991年から,足尾・日光山地では2003年から継続されている長期動態研究の一環として,国内外の複数の研究機関の協働で実施された。両調査地ではこれまでに延べで400頭以上のクマが学術捕獲され,その多くにテレメトリー機材やバイオロギング機材が装着されてきている。ツキノワグマのこのような長期研究は国内で前例がなく,その意味で高い学術的意義を持ち続けていると考える。結果はクマの管理施策にも供されているほか,複数の一般向け単行本などにも結果が著されており,普及啓発の面からの社会的意義も大きい。
