Outline of Research at the Start

Outline of Final Research Achievements
The research team investigated the metabolic regulatory mechanisms underlying skeletal muscle atrophy to develop preventive strategies for sarcopenia associated with lifestyle-related diseases. Using sepsis and diabetes models, they identified urinary titin as an early biomarker of muscle atrophy. Antisense nucleic acid agents targeting myostatin effectively prevented atrophy induced by diabetes and steroid treatment. The study also elucidated alterations in amino acid metabolism during stress conditions, highlighting the involvement of the mTOR and PDK4 pathways and their association with suppressed ATP production and hypoxic responses. Furthermore, administration of leucine and threonine was found to enhance muscle strength, immune function, and lipid metabolism. These findings offer promising avenues for new therapeutic approaches and clinical applications.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements
