| Outline of Research at the Start |

| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
Continuous observations using low-cost passive visible spectrometry (MAX-DOAS; Multi-Axis Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy) were conducted in Japan. The observation system was optimized for application in linear precipitation zone forecasting based on a quantitative validation study that compared water vapor data obtained from MAX-DOAS with data from existing observation techniques. Furthermore, by assimilating the MAX-DOAS water vapor data into a data assimilation system, cases were identified in which relative humidity in the lower atmosphere was corrected by more than 10%. In addition, focusing on the advantage of MAX-DOAS allowing flexible selection of observation azimuth angles, we analyzed simultaneous observation data from four MAX-DOAS instruments oriented in different directions. The results demonstrated the importance of MAX-DOAS in capturing water vapor heterogeneity that is likely overlooked by the Japan Meteorological Agency's local analyses.
