Outline of Research at the Start

北極域では急激な温暖化が進行中であるが、高緯度北極のツンドラにおいては、現時点で、植生構造や物質循環過程を含む生態系レベルの劇的変化は観測されていない。今後もこの状態が続くのか、ある時点で異なる状態に移行（レジームシフト）するのかは、北極生態系の将来を考える上で最も重要な問いの一つである。
本研究は、生態系の構造・機能に直結する炭素循環に着目し、高緯度北極スバールバルの気候条件の異なる地点において1）生態系構成要素の現地測定、2）過去の情報と衛星リモートセンシングによる比較研究、3）モデルによる炭素循環過程の解析を行い、急速な温暖化の下、北極ツンドラで進行しつつある変化を検知、将来予測を行う。
