Outline of Research at the Start

Outline of Final Research Achievements
The objective of this study was to develop a sensitive and easy assay that can evaluate the potential of air pollutants to produce reactive oxygen species (ROS) and adduct production separately. The substrates used in the assay were validated, and a highly sensitive assay was developed to calculate the amount of oxidized substrates (ROS production potential) by measuring the fluorescence derivatives of the substrates produced after reaction with test compounds. The collection and analysis of airborne particulate matter revealed that the contribution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon quinones to the production of ROS and adducts is important for the toxicity. Further perfection of the developed assay will make it possible in the future to utilize it for risk assessment and reduction of various diseases caused by air pollution.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements
