| Outline of Research at the Start |
Students attend a pre-interview to practice using the footswitch mechanism. Participants record their comprehension during the lectures. The research assistant will observe and take notes about the lecture. Using data collected during the lecture, stimulated recall interviews will be carried out.
|
| Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
The development of the foot pedal mechanism has led to two further international collaboration projects using the foot pedal mechanism and procedures. A grant in Sweden 2024-2026 where the current PI is a Collaborator: Swedish Research Council. Real Time Monitoring of Listening Comprehension in English Medium Instruction (Siegel, Siegel, & Kuteeva). USD 406,700. Grant # 2023-03853_VR and a project under consider in Hong Kong: Research Grant Council GRF project Orchestrating listening in EMI university lectures: A multimodal perspective of students’ strategic lecture comprehension (PI: Zhou; Co-I: Ducker). We are also currently preparing a second patent application for a software that I designed for the analysis of data. We have two papers under review, one with a major international journal and one as a chapter in an edit book. We hvae presented at various international conferences and will be presenting at a further international conference in the summer. According to the journal it is published in, our first paper had over 700 reads, although according to the web of science it has 3 citations to date.

| Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
We have collected the data that we intended to collect. The knock on effect of the mechanism we developed (further funding applications) was not expected. We will also get more publications than expected: I expected to get 3 publications in total but we are on track to get 6. One is already published (January 2024), two are in review, and a further one is currently being written, even though we have not finished analysing data. We have made multiple presentations at various conferences overseas and in Japan, and the results are well received.
|
| Strategy for Future Research Activity |
This year we will continue to analyze the data and write up papers on: the use of the mechanism to combat the problem of non-ergodicity and static data in listening research; listening challenges in EMI; listening strategies across different contexts; a longitudinal study on coping in lectures. There are no changes in the original plan for this year.
