Outline of Research at the Start

本研究は、1830年代から20世紀初頭までのアメリカ合衆国に着目して、公共善の構想と取り組みに一貫して介在した宗教性を摘出する試みである。
20世紀にいたるアメリカの福祉や社会改良運動の歴史は、脱宗教化と科学化で説明されてきた。教会を中心に個人の救済や矯正がなされた宗教の時代を脱して、近代化が進んだというのである。しかしこの世俗化論の見立ては、「長い19世紀」に宗教が果たした役割をとらえていない。本研究では、福祉や社会改良運動を広く「公共善」を構築し維持する営みととらえ、そこでの宗教の役割の大きさを検討する。世俗化論をベースにした近代史の叙述を再検討する試みである。
