Outline of Research at the Start

新人ホモ・サピエンスと共存していた旧人ネアンデルタール人の絶滅状況は近年、注目を集めているが、具体像は明らかでない。その原因の一つは、ネアンデルタール人の生息時期（約20数万年前～4万年前頃）の大半が、放射性炭素年代法の測定限界（約4.5～5万年）より古いため、多くの関係遺跡の年代が十分に定まっていない点にある。本研究は、放射性炭素年代法だけでなく、その欠を埋めうる年代測定技術である光ルミネッセンス法をあわせて採用し、南コーカサス地方アゼルバイジャンにおける関係遺跡について編年研究をおこなう。同時に、出土石器の分析も実施し、ネアンデルタール人が当地で絶滅にいたった経緯を論じる。

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

本研究は、アゼルバイジャンで現在、調査可能な代表的ネアンデルタール人遺跡の理化学年代測定を実施し、その編年を構築することを目的とする。これにより、南コーカサス地方におけるネアンデルタール人の絶滅年代を定め、彼らが新人ホモ・サピエンスと山岳地帯において長期間共存していたという近年の学説を検証する。加えて、石器分析をとおして、新人侵入期においてネアンデルタール人の社会がどのように変化して絶滅にいたったのかを論じることとする。
本年度は次の研究をおこなった。(1)筆者らが2016-2022年に調査したダムジリ洞窟出土石器群の分析、(2)1958年に発掘されたダシュサラフル洞窟出土石器群の分析、(3)ダシュサラフル洞窟の発掘、(4)タグラル洞窟の現地調査。いずれもアゼルバイジャンに渡航して実施したものである。
二つの石器群の分析によりネアンデルタール社会の文化動態についての最新の知見が得られたため（1、2）、論文執筆を開始した。すくなくともダムジリ洞窟の成果は2024年度には出版の目処が立った。一方、ダシュサラフル洞窟には文化層が残存していないことが判明した（3）。そのため別候補として、1960-70年代に発掘されて以降、現代的調査がなされていなかったタグラル洞窟を踏査したところ良好な文化層が同定できた（4）。年代測定用のサンプルを採取し現在、国内で分析が順調に進んでいる。これについても可及的速やかに公表すべく論文執筆の準備を開始した。
