Outline of Research at the Start

海域にある火山の噴火活動史やマグマ生成過程を、海底に堆積した火山灰を用いて解明する。海域の火山の活動は陸域の火山に比べて分かっていないことが多いが、火山周辺の海底からコア試料を得てそこに含まれる火山灰を調べることにより、噴火活動史にアプローチする。火山灰は微小であるため局所化学分析技術を駆使して、そこから得られる各種化学組成と年代の情報から、古い時代から現在に至るまでのマグマ組成の変化、マグマだまりの温度や深さ、噴火様式や噴火規模の変遷といった知見を得る。
