Outline of Research at the Start

溶けた金属と固体金属とが接する面 (界面) では、双方の金属元素を含む合金結晶が形成される。このような界面はハンダ付けやめっきなど、実用上重要であるが、その界面現象を直接見ることはきわめて難しい。金属は不透明であり、光学顕微鏡でその中を見ることはできない。X線や電子線も制限がある。本研究では、独自開発した原子間力顕微鏡 (AFM) 技術をもとに、その結晶成長過程をその場 (in situ) で原子スケールで可視化することで、その界面で何が起きているのかを直接明らかにする。
